Dry shampoo has become a thing over the last 5 years or so and I’m ohhhh so glad it has (where was this stuff when I was in college?!). I’ve had the store bought version for the past couple of years and haven’t really thought much about the ingredients in it until I saw my 9 year old using it on her hair. I went into full on mommy mode to investigate the ingredient label and yep, just like I thought, it contained a bunch of crazy chemicals I couldn’t even pronounce. So I decided I could make my own and see how it worked for my hair.
I’m happy to report this stuff is nothing short of AMAZING and works even better than the store bought variety. What I love most is that I didn’t have to buy anything to make this since the ingredient list is simple. Add a couple of essential oils in the mix and boom, you’re ready to extend your hair washing for days.
And, I’m going to jump ahead of myself and tell you that when you do finally wash your hair, your shower is going to smell like chocolate. How fun is that?!!
Here’s what you’ll need (keep in mind, blondes won’t need as much or any cocoa in their mix)
1/3 cup arrowroot powder
1/3 cocoa
1 tablespoon baking soda
5 drops of rosemary essential oil (found here)
5 drops of lavender essential oil (found here)
*adjust the amount of cocoa depending on the color of your hair. I have medium brown hair and this mixture works perfectly. It goes on a little lighter than I expected but once I brushed my hair, it evened out and looked natural.
This is so super easy, I barely even need to tell you how to mix it up! Just dump dry ingredients in a bowl and wisk. Then add your essential oils and wisk again and DONE! Yep, it’s that simple.
I chose to add both lavender essential oil and rosemary essential oil to this mix because these 2 oils are awesome at supporting hair health. I’ve been using these 2 essential oils in the shower when I shampoo to help support hair regrowth and I’m happy to say, it’s working! I’ve never been so proud to have my little baby hairs sprouting up at my hairline. 😉
Make sure you do your research before using just any ol’ essential oils. And make sure to join in on our essential oil discussion on facebook. We have our own little group where we discuss nothing but oils. So fun! Click here to join.
Pour into a container for easy storage.
I use a makeup brush and gently brush on the dry shampoo, let sit for a couple minutes, then brush and style. It’s perfect for those days in-between shampoos. Leaves my hair feeling fresh and the perfect texture to style, plus it smells fantastic! Try it out for yourself and let us know in the comments what you think.

How about black hair? What is it for the cacao/cocoa powder?

Do you have a recommendation for redheads?
Also, what would you recommend instead of Lavender as I am super allergic to it – massive asthma attacks and I prefer to remain among the breathing.
Thank you in advance!
