How to Make Snow

Do you have snow?! I don’t. Sniffle. I’ve been dreaming of a white Christmas but, here in the South, that’s just down right wishful thinking. I was just starting to feel REALLY sorry for myself and, more importantly, my kids, when Chickabug emailed a brilliant idea. With a couple of simple ingredients, and a ridiculously adorable printable, we had a “Can of Snow”! Imported Fresh from the North Pole, I might add. 😉  So on with the How to Make Snow tutorial.

How to Make Snow

How to Make Snow

Don’t you want to touch it?! My kids couldn’t keep their hands off the stuff. I kept having to remind them to move their hands so I could take pictures! 😉

So, how do you make this glorious faux snow? With 2/3 KOSHER salt, 1/3 cornstarch, and glitter until magical.  How to Make Snow Make a can of snow

Get those anxious little fingers mixing! Good luck getting them to stop. The texture is so fun!Make a can of snow Make a can of snowMake a can of snow

After your kids are done playing with it, (this could be hours), fill your “Can of Snow”. You can get these empty quart-size paint cans for about $2 at any home improvement store. Make a can of snow Make a can of snow Make a can of snow

Hammer down the lid good and tight.Make a can of snow

Make sure you add a paint can opener. It’s part of the fun! You can get them free at home improvement stores. Just ask for them when you are purchasing your paint cans. Make a can of snow

I adore the back which includes a witty ingredients list, and directions. I love that there is a “TO: FROM:”  This is, by far, the coolest present ever.Make a can of snow

I basically had to rip this can out of the little girl’s hands to put it in the freezer. (Make sure you just chill your faux snow. Freezing it for hours could cause moisture build up and ruin your cute printable.)Make a can of snowHow to Make Snow

Once it has chilled, get ready for some fun. Have a snow fight (not in the house!), decorate the windowsill, or gift it to friends.Make a can of snow

My kids can’t wait to deliver these cans. Heck, I can’t wait either! It’s pretty magical.Make a can of snowMake a can of snowMake a can of snowMake a can of snow

Note:  This “Can of Snow” is imported fresh from the North Pole. But it may taste like salt if you eat it, so… don’t. 😉

lol! your can of snow is too cute for words!! Right now we are drowning in the white stuff, it’s been snowing non-stop since yesterday!! We have about 10 inches already on the ground. Hopefully we are going to get a really white Christmas although at last glance out, the snow had changed to freezing rain! It’s beautiful when you don’t have anywhere to go!!

Absolutely darling! My sister and family can’t come to Utah for Christmas, but we’ll send them some “snow” so they can enjoy in Arizona!

One quick question…how much salt and corn starch does it take to fill a can? I want to know how much to buy so I only have to go to the store once.

Thanks so much for the cute idea!

Good Question! I should have addressed this in the post. I believe I used 2 containers of salt and 1 packages of cornstarch to fill one. (appx 4 Cups Salt, 2 1/2 Cups Cornstarch). You’ll need quite a bit to fill several cans, but fortunately, the ingredients are cheap. 🙂 –When you make this, will you let me know if that estimate is correct?

For the actual recipe, just make sure it’s appx 2/3 KOSHER salt and 1/3 Cornstarch. –Oh, and make sure to add glitter!!! 🙂 Good luck and please let me know how it goes.

This is such a wonderful idea for us snowless people.

    Couple of questions:
Can this be done with potato starch? My little one is allergic to corn.
Is Kosher salt the same as regular table salt? I don’t live in the US and I’ve seen anything called “Kosher salt” here.

    Thanks!

      December 19, 2012 at 8:19 am

Hi Elle! You could use potato starch, sure! You could probably also use cake flour, since it’s bright white and has a soft texture to it, the same as corn starch does.

Kosher salt is different than table salt – it has much larger granules. It *does* work better than table salt to make the faux snow. I’ve heard it’s hard to find kosher salt overseas but if you can any other type of coarse salt, it’ll work the same way (sea salt, pickling salt… it doesn’t have to actually be called kosher).

      I hope this helps! : )

    Hi Shelley-

How do you recommend ahearing the printable to the can? Did you print them on adhesive label paper or did you use double sided tape?

Adorable idea and perfect for a $10 and under gift exchange I have this weekend.

    Thanks!

The messiest part is the cornstarch. Yes, it can be messy, but also very easy to clean up with a quick vacuum. 🙂

When I tried to get the free printable for the label on the Make your own can of snow, it kept going in circles, back to the original page.

would love to sign up for the mailing list (and get this super cute printable!) but the site hasn’t let me do it. Tried the other day but never got an email and today it says “sorry could not complete your sign up. please try again later.” Anyone else having this problem? Thanks!

Hello! I love this idea. I am a subscriber, but can’t find the link anywhere that asks for the password I got in my email. I bought all the supplies and am ready to make some snow and send it to friends in warm climates. Please help.

    Thanks!
