Father’s Day is coming fast! Last year my daughter brought this home after a girls party and I’ve kept it under lock and key until now because I didn’t have enough time to post it before Father’s day last year. She went to Ali’s house (remember her from these posts? Here and Here) to make these with a bunch of friends. I thought it was such a ‘green,’ clever and thrifty idea for dad’s day. So we are going to work with the end product and put it back together!
A stick as a binding. Nice.
Items needed:
A stick
Scrap Paper
Rubber band–the thick kind
A cereal box
A hole punch
Newspaper
A brown grocery bag
Cut your cereal box down into 2 rectangles. One for the front and one for the back. They will be covered by the brown paper bag. It’s just for making the covers a bit stiff and not floppy.
It does not have to be a certain size. This one measured 5 inches long by 4 inches tall.
Place them on the brown paper bag and glue them down. Cut around the cereal box rectangles.
Cut a stack of scrap paper a smidgen smaller than the cover. Fold in half and punch holes. Long story short on this…you are making a note book.
Take your thick rubber band and
push through the holes of the notebook.
Oh…push it so the ends of the elastic are coming out the front.
The back should look like this.
Feed your stick through the rubber bands
to hold it in place.
Use the newspaper to spell out DAD or POP or #1 Dad…whatever will make the daddy smile.
Then add love notes.
Thanks Ali for letting us share this idea!

I love the rubber band and stick idea as a natural element for kids to make and bind their own nature journals – how fun!
