We’ve been keeping a secret. It’s a fabulous one. We wanted to test out ‘fashion’ occasionally on HowDoesShe and today is our first official fashion post! The best part, Sydney. You’ll see what I mean…
Give her a nice warm welcome. And if you want more of this, let us know. I know I do! -Shelley

Let’s talk about color for a sec…
But first, let’s just clarify that the incredible pastiness and creepy alien sapphire eyes you see in the picture are not real. No. That is the reflection of the snow. I promise that in real life, if you stare into my eyes you will not become hypnotized and start feeling very sleepy … very … very …. zzzzzzzzzzzz.
What?
Let’s talk about color for a sec. {Right. I already said that}. All of you who are a little creeped out by bright colors and mixing and matching them together, raise your hand.
MEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!! I AM! I AM! Do you see my hand waving? See how fast I can wave it? See the cool tricks I can do with it when I wave it really really fast? I amaze myself.
SO. Who wants to share a personal story about being scared of color? Bueller … Bueller …
Alrighty. I pick myself.
Here’s my story about being scared of color:
I just am. Dude. It is HARD to wear and pair colors together besides black, gray, navy blue, and white. Am I right? At least for me it used to be. My grandma used to say that I was in my 20’s going on my 80’s cause I had enough black in my closet to go to funerals for a living. {No joke. Wanna hire me?}
So here’s the trick I learned for wearing color. Are you ready?
Pick two new colors that you really like, that maybe aren’t supposed to go together. Find those colors in a couple great pieces of clothing, whatever looks best on you and is your favorite, AND pair them together. Also.
DO. NOT. MATCH.
It’s the most trickiest of all the tricks. Don’t match guys. Don’t even try. Wearing color with personal style comes in with the unexpected. The stepping out onto the limb. The experimenting with new ideas and seeing if they actually work. And if you’re out of your comfort zone for just a tiny bit while that happens … that is just dandy. We can make our own comfort zone. Somewhere else. And tape a sign on the front door that says, “No boring allowed. I mean it Grey and Navy. This is serious” And people will walk by and say, hey … that’s a nice sign. I need to get me one of those.
OK. Analogy over. Story over. Post over.

Even if it is the snow making your eyes that hypnotizing! WORK IT!! When I saw the picture I said “Oh golly!! Look at those gorgeous eyes!!” 😀
I have picked “my color” for the year. Teal. I <3 it soooooo much! I dunno if I have enough gastric fortitude to try any more color than that! LOL I often wear color tho. Orange, teal, pink. Just not all together!
Tiffany says
Jacque,
Wear orange with teal! Do it! 🙂
Nicky says

I’m so glad you posted this! Thanks for the “how-to”. Without it, I would have just copied the models outfit, completely missing the lesson…pick two colors and just go with it!! Keep the fashion posts coming! It helps us SAHMs who don’t always know how to “do style”!

It seems like the key to wearing anything is to wear it confidently. Sydney, you look confident!

What a refreshing, oozing- style, personality- plus blog. THE DAYBOOK rocks the house! Sydney is so adorable, she is the kind of girl you want to hate because she is so darling, but you can’t help but love because she is so likable. The only way HOWDOESSHE could have been better is to add fashion postings, and you did it!

So….
When my daughter was 7 she got invited to have a special lunch with the principle…because she’s awesome like that. She came downstairs on the morning of the lunch wearing rainbow checkered socks, pale pink floral leggings, a turquoise striped shirt.
I asked: “Are you sure that’s what you want to wear for your lunch with the principal? It doesn’t really match.”
She said: “Uh, Mom…MATCHING IS BORING.”
I decided right then and there that if what she decided to wear was clean, in good repair, and modest I didn’t care what she wore! She was being who she was, and I LOVED that! It really taught me something about myself and my own style, too!
Thanks for sharing this! It was great! Welcome to the group…I think you rock! And I look forward to more!

Thanks! How do you keep tights/nylons from getting ripped? It always happens to me especially carrying car seats and babies!
(what color are the tights? or is there only one purple Vera Wang at kohls?)

Gray, black with a little tan thrown in. Sometimes a peach, sometimes a cool greeny blue. Nothing else. Thanks for the inspiration. Love the tights with the skirt. I’m jealous.
