How do you make a birthday wreath?

This wreath is so festive and fun to decorate with for every birthday!

Birthday Balloon Wreath!

First you need balloons.  Lots and lots of balloons.

(2 bags of 72 count…the 1 1/2 to 2 inch sized balloon.  If you want it more full and to fill the outside edges, use more)

You also need:

1.  2 greening pin packs-found at Craft stores in the artificial plant section.

2.  and a straw wreath -leave the plastic on so it doesn’t shed.

You just take a greening pin, stick the balloon in the middle…

birthday wreathand stick it to the straw wreath.

Push it in nice and tight.

Do this over and over and over until the whole wreath is filled in colorful balloons!

birthday wreathWhat a way to welcome the birthday person with COLOR!  My kids love it when the birthday wreath comes out…it is now associated with birthday FUN!!!

    This is a wonderful idea. My son likes balloons so much that I am not sure how well it would last though. 🙂 He would probably spend his entire birthday asking if he could play with the wreath yet. I love the idea though and might have to try it out sometime. Thanks!

      I made one for my son’s December birthday party and our cold Canadian winter had no effect on it at all. I hung it on the door the day of the party last year and this year and it still looks as great as the day i made it.

    Love this idea! Do you think it would last being outside during January in MN? It would be nice to have it out for the week of D’s birthday, but I wonder what the freezing cold would do to the wreath….

      I lived in Minnesota for a couple years…I feel for you in the winter and for the balloons…that is the coldest I have EVER been! Maybe you could hang it on his bedroom door as someone suggested??? I can’t imagine it would harm it outside, but you never in MN BRRRRRRR.

        When my son was born it was 35 degrees below zero & that was without the windchill! So I think I will hang the wreath inside the door & then on the outside on his actual birthday. I love all your fabulous ideas! Thanks so much for inspiring me every day!

    Freeky that you and Heather posted this tutorial the very same day. It happened to be her son’s 4th birthday that day too. And yes, she got the idea from Carleen Tanner’s class too! I’ve actually had the stuff to make one, sitting in a cubby for a couple years. Haven’t gotten to it yet, but I’m now going to try a different variation for the wreath part (something my friend, Cami recently did) that actually holds it together even better!!     I looove this! I am currently making it. I bought 160 balloons (7 inch size) and can tell I’m going to need lots more. I think there might be a typo in saying you want 1.5-2″ size balloons. Looking at the pictures, I can tell they are bigger. I think the 7″ size is perfect. Also, I’m sticking more than one balloon in each greening pin… Such a great craft! Thanks!

    Just wanted to post after making this wreath, which I fell in love with when seeing it on your site!! THANK YOU! I bought an 18″ straw wreath, and I ended up using around 200-220 balloons, so you may want to pick up more balloons and pins if you decide to make this. It really is beautiful and will be perfect for birthdays!!

    I’m on the verge of making this and wondered what size of a wreath is used in the photos? I purchased an 18″ wreath but wondered if I was going to need more balloons and pins to get it all covered.

    oh rats! I just toted my toddlers to three different craft stores getting supplies to make this, and I could only get a 12 inch wreath. will it look silly so small? hmmm. perhaps I’ll have to make the small one for a bedroom door and an additional large 18 incher for the front door!

    I loved this. SO easy and FUN. Made it while watching a sports game with the hubby. Apparently 2 inch balloons are water balloons and I could only get 12 inch balloons which made it look lusher. I also used 2 balloons to a pin occassionally to ensure I had enough pins.

    This is the most fun wreath I have ever laid eyes on. You have no trouble finding a Christmas Wreath or any other holiday wreath for that matter, but a BIRTHDAY wreath is impossible. I am so excited to try this out.

    I am planning on making this wreath for my son’s 1st birthday, but I cannot find 1 1/2 – 2 inch sized balloons. I bought 7 inch but they look way too big on the wreath. Any suggestions???

        This is just the measurement across the balloon when it is deflated. We just used regular party balloons, the kind you would buy to blow up or have filled with helium. You could use any size you want, really.

    Loved your idea, and have made one for our monthly Birthdays for the Kid’s Club. I used a larger styrofoam wreath, hot glue, and much more that 144 balloons!! (I used to work at Looney Balloony…so I have bag fulls of every size and color imaginable! A wonderful craft! Thanks!

    Adored this idea so much, I made one for my 2YO’s recent birthday. I also found a wooden initial at the craft store, spray-mounted colorful scrapbooking paper on it and dangled it (with fish line) in the center. It was the most cheerful greeting our guests could have received, esp given the rainy day!

    This would be cool for homecoming week at schools, super bowl parties, Christmas…you can just use two or three colors for those events. Not just for birthdays. Ideas are just flooding my brain!!

    Hi there! I came across your blog during a search for a balloon wreath tutorial. Cute wreath, by the way. I went out to purchase the 1 1/2 to 3 inch balloons and I could only find (so far, I have been to 2 stores) standard 12in balloons. I assume this is the size when blown up, however from looking at the package the balloons I am finding are larger than 3 inches. Should I be looking for water balloon size? Thanks for your help!

      We just used the regular balloons you blow up for a party – not sure about the sizing. You could use any size, really – but the bigger the balloon, the less you probably need to fill your wreath. We just bought a bunch of packages and opened them as we needed them – then took back the unused packages.

    I attended a birthday party for a 6 year old, and the host had each little girl tie little balloons to the straps on rubber flip-flop straps. Theynwere tied close together and looked like ruffles! So cute!

    I am planning an Artist Party for my sons upcoming 8th birthday. And am going to use all of the primary colors. Came across your wreath and LOVED it. I went today to buy the stuff at JoAnn’s and used coupons for the wreath and greening pins. And only paid $5.68. Then went to the Dollar Tree and bought 150 balloons for $6.68. So when all is said and done I have spent like $13.00 for an absolutely adorable wreath. That will greet our guests when they arrive. Thanks so much for sharing!!

    I love this balloon wreath. I made a Halloween version for my Halloween party. I used black, green and orange balloons and hung a skull in the middle. I’m going to make balloon wreaths for all my parties! Thanks for the great idea.

    TIP: If you can’t find a straw wreath that’s wrapped in plastic (I couldn’t) wrap fabric ribbon around the wreath and hot glue in place to prevent the wreath from shedding.

    I wanted to know why greening pins? could staples be used? or does the balloon lay better with the pins? and is it one greening pin per balloon?

      I haven’t tried making one with staples – i am not sure they would be long enough to stick to the wreath and hold, but you could try. I put two or three balloons in each greening pin when I made mine. good luck!
