Gmail hacks
Gmail Hacks! Gmail has so much more to offer than just compose and send. In fact, you can do some pretty amazing things to make managing your email so much easier!
1. Drag and drop images directly into an email
Did you know you can drag and drop (or copy and paste) an image directly into the email you’re composing. No saving to your computer then attaching. Just drag and drop!
2. You’ve gotta check out the “Labs”
Click on the gear icon in the upper right corner of your gmail account.
Next, click on “Settings,” then the tab marked “Labs.” Labs are tools that people have built to work with Gmail and make it much easier. You can find lots of cool stuff in here to enable. {Psst…see #3 below!}
3. You can actually Un-Send an email!
Have you ever regretted sending an email and wished you could take it back? Or maybe you pushed “send” a little prematurely and wished you could do it over? Well, now you can! Go to the “Labs” section in your settings (see above), and scroll down to “Undo Send” and click “Enable.” Now you can undo a sent message!
4. Create Canned Responses
Do you find yourself composing or replying the same message over and over again? You can enable another cool Lab called “Canned Response” which will allow you to create automatic responses you can simply insert in your email without typing them out. Lazy, or totally cool?
5. Keyboard shortcuts
Speaking of lazy, to check out the nifty keyboard shortcuts you can do in Gmail, simply type “?” (the question mark symbol) while in your account (not in the search field), and this list of cool shortcuts will pop up.
6. Looking for something?
Looking for a really old email, or that recipe your mom sent ages ago that’s hidden in your email archives. Check out Gmail’s cool search option that can narrow it down quickly. Click on the drop down arrow in the right corner of your search box. Now you can search more specifically.
7. Don’t want to deal with it now? Add-to tasks
Don’t want to deal with a certain email, issue, or person right now? That’s cool, just select the email, click the “More” option, then “Add to Tasks.” Gmail will keep a section of tasks for you to complete for later.
8. Add a cool personal look with themes
Make your account more fun and visually appealing with Gmail themes. Click on the gear icon in the upper right of your account. Click “Settings,” then the last option “Themes.” There are lots of fun colors and graphics to choose from.
9. Seeing stars
Sort and categorize your messages with color-coded stars. Most of us know how to flag an email as important with a yellow star, but if you go to your settings, under the “General” tab, you can enable the use of many other colors and options.
10. Color coded labels
Similarly, you can use color-coded labels for organization and clarification purposes. Under “Settings,” click on “labels” to manage.
11. When copying and pasting text into an email, get rid of wacky fonts quickly
This is one of my favorite Gmail discoveries, and so easy! You know when you copy and paste text from an online site into an email and the text is wacky (like the top image)? To quickly revert that text to standard format, click the {Tx} button at the bottom right corner of your email. Voila!
12. Spell check…do it!
Gmail will automatically fix your spelling for you, but sometimes there are words it doesn’t recognize. Do a quick spell check after you type an email by clicking the down arrow tab in the bottom right corner of your email. Under “more options,” click on spell check.
13. Add up to five email accounts under one
This hack is super convenient if you have multiple email accounts, but don’t want to log in and out to access your emails. You can set it up so that emails from all other accounts are forwarded to only one inbox. Super convenient. In your settings, click on the “Accounts” tab then click “Add another mail account.”
