I have had many questions on how I get my top knot to look so full…
I wish I could say, “Huh what are you talking about? I carelessly throw it up and it looks like this all the time!” But the truth is- that would be a lie.
The truth is that I have rebelious crazy hair (don’t be deceived- it has been straightened in this photo) and if I don’t attempt to tame it down with product or a good haircut (not to mention bangs that go clear to the middle of my head) it looks like I have been roaming around the Amazon for years without a comb or a brush. No I am serious. In junior high my unruly bedhead scared my friend’s little sister so badly I was nicknamed “amazon woman” for an entire year. True story.
So, in attempt to save me some drying time and from scaring small children- I do what I can to take out a little bit of thickness in my hair- but unfortunately, it doesn’t leave me a lot to work with when wanting to throw it up in a top knot. So, I use a secret weapon.
And I am willing to bet many if not most of you already may know the secret…
Shhhhh… but I know there are some of you may not know of this very rare and very difficult hair technique that I am about to reveal.
The secret?
This.
That’s right. A sock. One that I stole from my husband’s sock drawer- with holes in it of course- he wouldn’t mind right?!
You will need:
A sock
Scissors
Pick or Comb
Hair elastics
Bobby pins
Okay now start by cutting off the front part of the sock where your toes would go.
Then scroll down and watch carefully as I am about to blow your mind…
Okay not my best top knot… but you get the idea. Easy huh!
Still unsure? Watch this video to see it done live.

Wow – you just saved me and my fellow dancers some $$! Those are called hair donuts or bun donuts in the dance world and they typically sell for $5-$6 a pop…but when you can make one for FREE – ummm…yes please!

GREAT idea! I will definatley be trying this. Can I tell you how impressed I am with your bangs? Yeah, your bangs. I have the same cut, but I look….homeless and you look Fabulous! I think your next post needs to be on your bangs 😉
Shelley says
agreed! 🙂

I use the same trick, but instead of wrapping the hair around the sock, I just insert the ends of my hair and start rolling the sock so the hair wraps around by itself. If your done there’s no need for securing it, mine usually stays put the entire day..
