With Father’s Day just around the corner, I couldn’t resist the chance to share our
traditional Father’s Day dessert,
Ooey Gooey Mud Pie.
Most of the fathers I know don’t need much to keep them happy. In this case a little ice cream, hot fudge and a pie crust are about all you need to make them feel like they are fantastic, marvelous, terrific, and so on and so forth… It may not be a coupon book or a new tie but trust me, it will bring a smile to the face and a tear to the eye. Okay, maybe I’m getting a little carried away but it’s better than a kick in the pants, right?
Humor me as I get a little introspective. (Deep breath.)
One soggy, dying garden,
One garden shovel, abandoned on the grass in disgust,
One inattentive mother,
One vivacious little girl…
The perfect recipe for mud pie.
Oops, not that kind. But when that proud little face hands over her painstakingly prepared creation and gives you that look like, “Go ahead, Mommy. Try it.” So I take a big scoop and pretend to take a big bite… chew, chew, “mmmmmmmm!!!” “You like it Mommy?” “It’s aMAzing!” She smiles and while beaming, takes a giant bite of mud–I hear the little pebbles grinding between her teeth. Alright, fun’s over. Let’s hose off and go make some real mud pie.
Ingredients
We usually make it with Oreo ice cream but I’m switching it up this year with Snickers candy bars.
Chop ’em up.
Mix ’em in with about a quart of softened vanilla ice cream.
Now for the fun part. Spread hot fudge along the bottom of an Oreo cookie crust.
Dump in the ice cream mixture, cover, (take a cool picture) and freeze.
A few hours later cut a slice, pour hot fudge on top, add a little bling-bling and you’re done! It’s easy, yet special and the perfect complement to steak and potatoes.
Any other ice cream/topping combos you think would be yummy?

YUM!!! This is my kind of pie…one I can actually make and it sounds delicious. I would have to go back to the Oreo idea – you just can’t beat Oreos!

Oh my heavens this sounds amazing!! It reminds me of those “dirt cups with worms” we used to make when we were kids…only this sounds even better with ice cream!!! I’m saving this recipe for sure!

I’d forgotten these, but growing up, my mom made these for neighbor Christmas gifts. It was pretty much the same–oreo cookie crust, but instead of the hot fudge on the bottom, she covered the entire top with it, then added toasted sliced almonds all over the top. I think she used mint chocolate chip ice cream or tin-roof sundae. Sure to please! I think I’m gonna do this for Father’s Day. Thanks for the great idea. She used the Hershey’s hot fudge you get in a can … not sure if that’s the same stuff or not? Yum!!

I love the mint idea. I think I’ll try a grasshopper pie this weekend. Thanks for sharing!

Thanks for the recipe! I made this for my hubby, and he LOVED it! I couldn’t find an Oreo crust, so I used a chocolate one instead. However, I’m on the hunt for the Oreo. I’m sure it would taste even better!

We used to do these all the time, only a version called Candy Bar Cakes. Done in a 9×13 pan with a graham cracker crust or crushed oreo crust . . . take your pick of candy bars (we did BUTTERFINGERS a lot) mixed up with the softened ice cream & then freeze.

This looks so easy and so yummy too! Going to have to try this one out now.
