Toys for Christmas are always a big hit at first, but usually the excitement for the toy dies after a couple days. But sometimes you score and get something that is used over and over. I’ve been trying to think of our biggest Christmas hit toys to share. I have two boys, ages 8 and 6, who have yet to tire of their toys that enable them to build things. Legos, K-nex and wooden blocks. We have tried others like Lincoln Logs and Tinker Toys, but they have not received as much use as the others.
Legos. While I love that they can use their imagination with the basic sets this company offers, I have to say that my boys get a little more excited when they get a themed kit. Right now they are into the Lego Agents. But when it comes down to actually playing with the legos, it usually turns into much more than just secret agents. They build airplanes, buildings, ships, houses, etc. and their imaginations end up running wild!
K-nex. I love that these take concentration and following instructions. They come with an illustrated step-by-step instrutcion manual on how to build what the package says they can build. I usually hate putting toys together, but I even enjoy making these. My boys usually start by making the suggested creation, then end up making up their own contraptions that amaze me.
Wooden blocks. You can’t go wrong here. Toddlers love stacking them and my 6 year old still plays with them to make car cities for his matchbox cars, complete with trap doors and garages. Imagination at its best with these.
While my boys have used these toys the most, my 3 year old daughter has her own set of bigger legos that are seeing just as much use!

Take it from a grandma, the toys that retain kids’ interest the longest are ones where they have to use their brains and create. What they build with your suggested toys can be different every time, so they don’t get bored. Love the pic – who is that adorable boy?
