Thank you KiwiCo for sponsoring this post and for giving our readers 50% off their first crate (including the NEW Yummy Crate!) with code HOWDOESSHE.
When I was a kid, my family of seven became very creative about living on a very small budget. My mom’s number one job was to raise us five kids and my dad worked 40 hours a week at a blue collar job. I wouldn’t change a second of my childhood. Our meager circumstances were a priceless opportunity to be resourceful.
We didn’t get the cool, expensive toys I saw on TV commercials. Instead, we became experts at creating our own toys out of odds and ends we rounded up around the house. I remember making robots out of nuts, bolts, and empty toilet paper tubes. Without even knowing it, my siblings and I were living the STEAM life.
Because of my childhood, I encourage my kids to get creative any chance I get. Creating our own fun taught us to be problem solvers and creative thinkers–skills that have carried me far into adulthood. And that’s one of the biggest reasons I love KiwiCo Crates and STEAM kits. They give my kids a chance to build their own toys, learn about how things work, and put their brains in motion as they play.

And now, KiwiCo just released a brand NEW Yummy Crate–the newest addition to their subscription line (they have 9 total now!) and I’m so excited about it!
The Yummy Crate is designed to spark a love for science and cooking in kids ages 6-14 and it springboards into a lot of hands-on experimentation in the kitchen. (I’ve even learned A LOT about chemical reactions in cooking that are fascinating! You really can learn something new everyday.)
The Yummy Crate is HERE and 3 Reasons Kids LOVE it!
1. Kids love cooking.
If your kids are like mine, they love to be right there with me in the kitchen whenever I’m making anything. Kids love the hands-on nature of cooking and with the new Kiwi Yummy Crate, they get to be the master chef.
What comes in the Yummy Crate:
- 3 delicious family-friendly recipe cards that teach kids valuable science and cooking skills. (Our Tasty and Toasty kit came with the recipes for yummy burgers, crispy chicken strips, and golden smashed potatoes).
- 2 fun hands-on STEAM activities (ours came with activities to create your own restaurant. The kids had so much fun building a menu.)
- A Grownup Guide: This tells you what ingredients you’ll need to get.
*What doesn’t come in the Yummy Crate: the ingredients. Your Yummy crate doesn’t come with ingredients so that you can customize to your family’s preference and dietary restrictions.

2. They can create their own restaurant.
KiwiCo Crates come in 1, 3, 6, or 12-month options. You can try a crate once, or get the best deal and jump on a flexible subscription plan. My kids love that every month they get to play restaurant.
They practically wait by the door for their Yummy Crate to hit the cement, then they’re tearing into it and planning their new restaurant.
You get the ingredients and then let the fun begin.
3. You learn cool things about food.
In this particular kit, my kids learned about the Maillard reaction when meat meets a temperature of 140 to 165 degrees Celsius and causes browning. It’s so fun learning the why behind the how. It makes cooking (and eating) much more interesting and meaningful.
Like I said, I’ve learned a lot through my kids’ Yummy crate. So cool!
Each Yummy Crate will teach you cool scientific facts, history, and fun tidbits that you never knew before about your favorite foods. And as a mom, I love that it encourages my picky eaters to try new things.
Three Fun Yummy Crates To Try
While the first Yummy Crate we tried was the Tasty & Toasty, we can’t wait to try the others:
- Tasty & Toasty- Hands-on savory family favorites
- Rise & Shine- Fun breakfast foods
- Bright & Delightful- Colorful fruit and veggie inspired dishes and snacks
You grab the ingredients, then let the fun begin
Yummy Crates don’t come with ingredients so that you can modify to your family’s preferences. After grabbing a few simple grocery items (many you may already have on hand), your kids can get busy cooking up some fun and tasty treats for the whole family. They love the responsibility and I love having foods that my kids will eat.
Kiwi crates and kits make the BEST activities for families. They’re one of my favorite gifts to surprise my own kids as well as friends and cousins during the year. Shop single crates from KiwiCo’s Store (there are some REALLY fun ones in there that my kids have gone nuts over!) or give the gift of learning with a monthly subscription.
Go take a look at their fabulous sets and holiday projects that help kids get creative while they play and get HALF OFF your first KiwiCo crate with code HOWDOESSHE at checkout.
If I learned anything from my childhood, it’s that invention can take you far.
