Or you could just learn your multiplication tables and DO THE MATH. It is completely possible to do all those problems on paper without a calculator.

This IS doing the math. It’s just not in a familiar format. Why do you think that this works? It is formulaic. It’s not a cheat anymore than understanding multiplication to figure out exponents is.
Mathematics is much more elegant than the dictatorial rote memory bit that is typically taught. This is a fine example of that.
The strategy that we have endorsed, “to just learn your multiplication tables”, is worthless. It imparts no real knowledge, just a few weird memories. It doesn’t beget any understanding, though.
