I consider myself a fairly healthy person, but unfortunately, my life has been plagued with migraine headaches.
I realize that it could be a lot worse, but it’s still something I deal with. I get the debilitating kind of migraine headaches where I lose my vision, experience the numbness in my arm and have horrible pain in my head. I’m not a fan of medicine and I try to avoid it if possible.
I’m constantly trying to find natural ways to cope with my migraines. If you’re cursed with these painful headaches, then I need to say that you should always talk to your doctor about what is best for you. I’d also love to hear what you do if you get these.
I have discovered these natural solutions that help alleviate the pain and other symptoms:
- Avoiding MSG in food (this almost always brings on a migraine for me).
- Rub a little peppermint oil on my forehead and temples when they strike.
- Lay in a dark room.
- Place cold packs on my head.
- Rest, and try to sleep it off.
I’ve found that doing these 5 things can really help me cope. I have yet to find the magical cure and don’t know if I ever will, but these do help alleviate the pain a bit.
Most of these are pretty straight forward, but #3 seems to be the hardest.
Finding a dark room during the day is a bit of a trick. The only dark place in my house is the closet and that isn’t exactly the most comfortable ‘room’. I’ve always wanted shades that can darken my bedroom. My bed is so much better to rest in that on the floor. I talked to and they helped me figure out a way to have darkness by using the.
Let me say that this is an advertised post, but I would promote their company any day. I loved working with them. I’m a busy mom and entrepreneur who doesn’t have a lot of time, but I always am looking for ways to save time and money. They worked with my schedule and even sent me free color samples in the mail so I didn’t have to lug all my kids into a store to pick out colors. They have a large selection of styles, colors and fabrics.
I didn’t think ordering shades on line could be easy.
It. really. is.
AND I’m so happy with how they turned out!
I was nervous about these arch windows and had googledpreviously to working with blinds.com. Nothing was coming up that I wanted and I honestly didn’t think I was going to be able to cover them with something that I liked.
One thing I loved about working withinds.com is that I could talk to a real live human to help. Not only were they kind, they knew what they were talking about! They had experience!
They have designers to walk you through the whole process, if you need help. You can even book a skype consultation through their face2face service.
Joshua was my rep and he was super knowledgeable about all the products and knew exactly what would be best for the windows and even knew how to work with those tricky arch windows. I didn’t know if there were options out there for arch shades. I thought it was more of a one stop shop. I was surprised at ALL of the options they had available. Wood shades to , honeycomb shades to honeycomb blinds and more. Joshua helped me understand the pros and cons of each so I knew which I’d like better! I really am impressed with the large selection of styles, colors and fabrics they have available. Blinds aren’t something that I’m easily impressed by, but these changed my mind!
So, onto the tricky arch window. The one I got was a ovable room darkening cellular arch shade and IT MOVES!. I thought previously to working with blinds.com that it was going to stay permanently covered or not be covered at all. Look how it turned out…I’m so happy withthe way it looks and works!
Now, let’s talk about installation.
Installation is easy enough for anyone to do – even of you’re not particularly handy. There are helpful videos over on their site and you can always call!
Note: These are my husbands hands. I was taking the pics while he installed;)
Once we got all of our ellular shades installed, I gave it a try in the middle of the day. I closed the door, dropped the shades and was amazed by how dark it was. Now, when I feel a migraine coming on, I know that I can relax in my dark bedroom to help cope. Number #3 natural remedy is now accomplished!
SO future migraine. I’m ready for you. I’d rather you stay away, but I know you’re lurking.
Check out They offer great pricing, free samples, online tools, free shipping plus more. The website is easy to navigate and has tons of helpful videos.
You won’t be disappointed.

UPDATE****
I wanted to show you how my daughters room turned out. She gets migraines too. SHE IS 11. IT breaks my heart when these strike.
She is so happy she can sleep in her own bed when she gets one of these.
I’m really happy with blinds.com and the blackness it can provide.

I have had migraines all my life and used up almost every sick day of my life with them. You can trace them down my family tree. My bedroom has always had blackout shades but I would love to have blackout shades exactly like you show on your blog in my breakfast room for those many mornings when I still, even in retirement, wake up with migraines. I too have the arches on top of my windows and didn’t want to cover them permanently. What a wonderful solution. These shades would make waking up with a migraine just a little bit brighter. (pun intended) What else can you expect from a retired high school English teacher?
Lissette Paz says
I deal with migraines as well, and with in minutes of using lavender oil I find relief!
Laurie says
I am lucky that I don’t get migraines, but my husband does. We moved into our new house a year ago and his things are having it be cool in the room (we really need to install a ceiling fan) and like you – total darkness. Our current blinds are light filtering and 1 is broken. We need new blinds, but I was having a hard time as well because of the tall bay window with odd sizes, and still other “normal” windows in the room I would want to match.
Stephanie Ford-Smith says
Sunglasses and lavendar seems to sooth my migraines! I don’t have too many but I hate medication and I am always looking for other ways.
Anne-Marie S. says
I would put new blinds in the living room and bedrooms.
velder says
LAVENDER OIL ON YOUR PILLOW OR FOREHEAD HELPS SO MUCH
Debbie @ One Little Project says
I desperately need to put blinds into our master bedroom! Our old burgundy blinds (yes, burgundy!) from 1990 broke about 4 months ago, and now we have nothing. I have been struggling with arch blinds for years! I never knew there was an option to get arch blinds that actually open. I need to get these for my bedroom!

I’d use the gift card to add new blinds to my bedroom. With a baby and crib in our room, darker shades would be a godsend. As far as migraines, I’m a fan of a cold washcloth over my face.
Heather S says
I would makeover my living room!
Jessica says
I get some pretty serious migraines too. I even have to wear noise canceling headphones. Not always convenient when you have young ones!

Haley Rhoades says
I have had migraines since I was in middle school. They have become worse over the past few years. I too have discovered that dark helps, but no blinds or curtains seem to do the trick.
Altha says
I do all your ideas to avoid migraines but like you, I don’t have a good dark room. Thank you for advice.
Kristin says
I would do my bedroom/bathroom. My husband sometimes works night so he sleeps during the day. It is hard for him to sleep soundly in our bedroom because even with faux wood binds and dark curtains, we just can’t get the room dark enough.
Thanks for the awesome giveaway!
Christi says
I would SO get those ultimate blackout blinds for migraine days! My fav non med remedy is placing a tennis or racquetball at the base of my skull and lying on it. The pressure there helps when other things don’t…
Krystal says
I would put the blinds up in my master bedroom. I need all the extra sleep I can get, so the blinds blocking out all the light would definitely help.

Chrissy says
My room of course!
Mary says
Bad migraine since I was a teenager. About four years ago I was diagnosed with MS and the migraines have gotten worse. I’ve been on many medications for migraines sometimes they work sometimes they don’t. I usually try to lock myself in a room with the blinds closed curtains closed. I try to keep everything at the house completely quiet. It would really be awesome to have blinds actually blacked out your windows completely so you wouldn’t have to worry about any light bothering you when you have a migraine. thank you for the opportunity to be able to get a discount on these awesome blinds.
Sarah says
I’m a single mom that works full time night shift. I only sleep 4 hours during the day and I would love to have those four hours be of higher quality. These blinds seem like a dream!
Debbie says
I have lived in my house for eight years and have yet to update the existing window treatments. I’m embarrassed to admit that some of the shades are at least 25 years old!! Given the number of windows that need updating, this giveaway would certainly help! Thanks!
Nora says
I would totally get black out blinds! We have some now, but they were a cheap brand, and falling apart. My husband often works nights, and we need the room dark, to sleep. The walls are already a very dark green, which helps. In addition, I get terrible headaches, at times, and a quiet, dark room, is about the only thing that helps, along with medication. This would be an awesome opportunity!
Jody says
We would use them in the bedrooms. Drinking lots of water and avoiding sodium has helped us.

Stephanie N says
I would definitely do my living/dining room combo.
Avra says
Definitely my bedroom! Not only are the current shades not room darkening, they were never measured right in the first place and are too narrow for the windows! And – I also have an uncovered half=round (arched) window up near the sloped ceiling – it’s like daylight in there in the middle of the night! Ive been in this house 23 years and have yet to figure out the solution!
Briana says
My husband works the graveyard shift and we have an arched window in our room. I’d love to get a blackout shade for our room!

We just bought a new house so honestly we could use them in any room. But our kitchen is probably where we will start.
tina mccallum says
We are waiting for our clear to close (CTC) on a new house. We need everything! New blinds for our daughter’s room would be amazing!
joDee H says
My master bedroom needs blackout blinds. My neighbor leaves a security light on all night and it shines directly into our room. Our drapes just cannot shut it out. Blinds would really help us get better sleep.
Beth says
I would probably use them in my son’s room. He also gets migraines and has since he was 1 1/2. ? Though I suspect he is growing out of them to some degree, it would be amazing to have a truly dark room for when they strike. Actually, these blinds would also be nice for my little son, too, who typically rises with the sun!
Ryan says
I got to bed at 8pm every night, while it is still light out in order to wake up at 3am for work. These would be great to help darken my bedroom so I could sleep better at night. They would also help when a migraine hit me!

Kim says
I would use them in my master bedroom. Our bedroom gets really hot with the sun during the summer and black out blinds would help with that
Lauren says
My BFs son could certainly use those blinds. The light prevents him from getting enough sleep.
Tisha says
I never had migraines until I was pregnant with my daughter and when she was young I had the kid you get. It was really scary to have your vision go and your arm go numb when you are driving home from work with your child in the back seat. I went in and had a bunch of test done and was given a prescription which I only took twice and other than that just dealt with it.
Now I take Thrive. I have been taking it for 8 months and I have only had 3 headaches all together and zero migraines. It has been fantastic and it is all natural, which is always a huge bonus. I hate putting a lot of drugs in my body.
Danielle says
Thanks for sharing something that has worked for you! I get migraines like these where not only does my arm go numb, but one whole side of my body and I loose my vision for sometimes hours. They are terribly debilitating and I get them often. Where can I go to learn more about Thrive? My google search wasn’t too helpful. 😉
Jennifer Magreevy says
lifelong migraine sufferer! I haven’t found any natural remedies. Mine can last for days. I’ve even tried prescription medication and it doesn’t work. Many times I get sick and then I have a little relief. Sleeping it off is my best option! I’d love to win this gift certificate, we are building a house and need window coverings. 🙂
Alexus says
Migraines seem to run in my family through the women. The thing that definitely works the best for me is to go to sleep in a dark room. The rooms that would benefit the most from blinds would definitely be the main living room or master bedroom

I would DEFINITELY update the master bedroom in the new house we’re moving into! I’ve had migraines since I was 16, so I definitely understand what you deal with. I had a status migraine for 10 days a couple weeks ago. Definitely would have loved to have blackout shades. I have started using StopAin recently. I put it on the back of my neck and it really seems to ease the tension that comes along with my migraines. It’s like IcyHot but only cold. You should look into it! It’s really handy to have at work b/c sometimes the smell of peppermint EO can make my migraines worse.
Megan says
Great room!
Debra Reisetter says
I would do my bedroom! I work 3rd shift at a hospital and sleep during the day. I have “black out” curtains over the windows, but they still don’t do the job properly like these would!

I would love room darkening shades for my master bedroom. My husband works evenings, and ends up sleeping late in the morning, and he is often woken up by the sun. It would be so great for him to not have to deal with that anymore!
Laura @ Semi-Vegetarian.com says
I’d love new blinds in our master bedroom! Our current blinds are partially broken, but with a tall bay window it’s so darn expensive to replace them.
Tina A. says
My honeycomb shades are all 20 years old, so all the rooms need new window treatments, but I would start in my daughters bedroom-her room darkening shade broke and the current regular shade lets in too much light!
Jennifer B says
I too suffer almost daily from migraines so these would be awesome
Lisa Stokley says
I have had migraines since I was in the 4th grade! I remember coming home & putting the pillow over my head with just my nose stuck out. With 4 kids, and 4 grandkids, I still do! I have tried all types of medicines, and even shots! These would be wonderful for the bedroom!

We just bought a new house and need blinds in the bedrooms.
Cara says
My husband has been begging for black out shades in our room since we moved here 3 years ago…! He is a terrible sleeper and I’m not sure if it will help but I guess it could be worth a try…(I, on the other hand, don’t really like a super dark room at night…which is also probably why I haven’t spent the money on them…)
Sunnie says
Id use it for in the living room.

Karina Moore says
I would do our kitchen; we just moved into a house that has lots of windows in the west facing kitchen & it gets too bright & hot in the afternoon!
Amanda Ballard says
I would use the gift card to redecorate my boys shared room. They are 8 and 5, and the cheap metal miniblinds that were here when we bought the house are destroyed! They need window treatments that are sturdy enough to handle some wear and tear from two rough boys, and that are solid enough to block out the early morning sun!

Kristen Engel says
I’d love to put these in my bedroom! I wake up with migraines, partially due to the fact that the sun shines right in my window. It’s so unpleasant to wake up to the sun right in your face!
Lori Lovett says
Have any of you migraine sufferers ever heard of the mangosteen fruit? Used in Southeast Asia for centuries and is a natural anti-inflammatory. Have heard from people that the juice made from this fruit has helped with migraines. Would love to get you more information, check out the website, juice has changed my life. I was pre-diabetic and blood sugars have been normal since I started drinking this.

I would put real wooden blinds in my bedroom window (which is an odd 60″ wide but only 44″ tall). I would get the Architectural 2 3/4″ Wood Blind in the
Davenport Shadow color with the 1″ Herringbone Terra tape. My room has red walls with a white ceiling and sort of taupe colored lower moldings and door.

I’d definitely use the $200 gift card for my room. I get migraines too and it’d sure be nice to have a dark place to go to. I have an eye mask but putting anything around my already aching head is truly no fun!!!!!
Carrie Engler says
I am also one who suffers with migraines and have since I was a teen. Mine have been pinpointed to having PCOS. I have found hat if I can keep my PCOS under control I get fewer headaches. Steam showers, dark rooms, cool cloths, etc. are my go to remedies. If I’m out and feel one coming and am without medication I grab a yellow soda and a snickers bar (my Dr actually suggested it) as it gets the blood flowing quicker. If I could add blackout blinds to our bedroom it would be great!!!!
Misti B. says
I would add room-darkening blinds to our master bedroom as my husband deals with horrible migraines and needs a dark space to lay down in since light just makes it worse. We currently have the pull down blinds but some light still comes around the sides. I love the track that the cellular shades have to keep that from happening!
MaryBeth says
I deal with migraines as well. If I can catch them early enough Excedrin Migraine and rest in complete darkness (and quietness) is the best way I’ve found. I will have to try the essential oils.
I would put new blinds in the arch above my front door that brings in a huge amount of light in the morning (good thing and a bad thing at times). I would also love them for the two windows above my tub in our bathroom. The current ones are desperately in need of replacing.
Eliza F says
I was just thinking today I really need to update our living room with blackout blinds to deal with all the southern-facing heat we have. So that’s my choice.

I’d love this and would first attack my master bedroom. we moved into an old farmhouse and I keep saying blinds are a must.
Margie Williams says
I’ve been suffering with migraines for nearly 20 years and without my Sumatriptan, I’d be a hot mess! Of course, there are times when I just have to sleep them off.
I’d replace my blinds in my living room, since my foster puppy chewed them up! : (
Lisa says
I would like to have these darkening blinds for my son’s bedroom which is picture-window size and faces full-west. It gets to hot in there during the summer, even with lined draperies and a honeycomb blind. Luckily, we do not have migraine issues.

I would love to put room darkening cellular blinds in my room for my nasty migraine headaches. I would have to pile up pillows on my head anymore.

I would makeover my daughter’s room!
Marie says
My blinds are almost 20 years old! I would buy new blinds for my living room and kitchen.
Daniel Davis says
I worked 30 years Graveyard shift and another 13 between swing and day shift. The blackout blinds saved my life. I also used the cone & tapered soft ear plugs for the noise I purchased at Grainger Industrial Supply, and an eye mask from Bed and Bath, the blue ones with the moon and stars that are made from silk. Those items really made the difference with my Migraines and getting the rest I needed. My Migraines were stress related, However my daughter suffered also and we found out Her Migraines were from a micro hole in her heart. If you suffer from Migraines see a cardiologist get checked.
