Hi! I follow your site on facebook 🙂 We have a blogged: nothingnewnothingwasted.blogspot.com because we challenged ourselves to not buy anything new for a year (and it has gotten quite a lot of attention – even on national t.v. news – Canada)
Anyway, one of my posts was about the trasistory nature of decorations for parties. My 5 year old, noticed there weren’t any at his birthday last week and I told him about the cost, waste etc. so he suggested making reusable decorations that we can use every year. We LOVE your balloon wreath and I hope to have it hanging before our next childs bday 🙂
thanks for sharing your creativity!

Alison-
I showed my kids and told them we were childhood buddies-they thought that was so cool! What a fun way to see old friends! Just leaves me one question, how do you do all this and still keep the kids happy, house clean, etc.. Way to go! Liz (Tanner)Jensen

Great job, Alison! I really love your outlook on birthdays. The birthday count downs with notes and special activities leading up to the big day are right up my alley. You’re bound to create new memories/traditions from this!
Although I really do like gifts, I’m not sure that’s always the best way to show love. Last year when we went to grandma’s the day after Christmas, my kids had oodles of gifts to open– far more than they received at home. The gifts were given with love and many of the gifts were practical and appreciated by mom (pj’s, new sheets, etc were included) but I noticed that my kids quickly became greedy, whiny and couldn’t wait their turn to open the next gift. It quickly spiraled from genuine Thank You’s to ripping off the paper, showing disinterest in what they found inside and then immediately demanding the next box. Sometimes giving a pile of gifts, though intended to be fun and exciting, doesn’t translate the same way as it was intended. I love the ideas to decorate, do things together with the child that they will enjoy, and create traditions that the entire family can do together. I truly believe those things convey the most love, create opportunities for other siblings to appreciate their brother/sister, and help the birthday child FEEL loved, special, and celebrated.
