Hiya Pals! Welcome to Friday! It was so good getting to know you this week … your responses to last week’s post were awesome! Thanks for being my lunch break entertainment and my distraction from a terribly boring class period. Don’t know how I can ever repay ya.
Or wait! Maybe I do. How about I spend the next 2 minutes convincing you to spend some dolla dolla bill y’all on a couple of absolutely essential wardrobe pieces. I’ll make sure you’re really good and CONVINCED. That way you can totally justify your purchases to the men in your lives cause … obviously… you were brainwashed. That should do the trick right? Right. Here we go.
Essential Item #1: Flared jeans. I don’t care if you’re curvalicious or miss flat bottom like me. These babies will KILL IT every time. And when I say kill it, I mean kill it. Like somebody might look at your legs and die cause they’re so freakin long.
Essential Item #2: Something floral. Doesn’t have to be a dress. But it needs to be something besides your underwear. There is nothing that says springtime and I’m-a-feminine-girl-so-come-over-here-and-smooch-me like a floral pattern does.
Essential Item #3: A shrunken blazer. And I like to compare this particular item of clothing to Green Eggs and Ham. (yes kids. I said Green Eggs and Ham. just go with it)
And I will eat wear them in the rain.
And in the dark. And on a train.
And in a car. And in a tree.
They are so good, so good, you see!
So I will eat wear them in a box.
And I will eat wear them with a fox.
And I will eat wear them in a house.
And I will eat wear them with a mouse.
And I will eat wear them here and there.
Say! I will eat wear them ANYWHERE!
I had to make a few edits though. Don’t eat your clothes K?
Essential Item #4: Something with a bright pop of color. Maybe even in a DARING shade. Like this lemongrass yellow I’m wearing. Husband says that it’s my lucky skirt … cause if I ever have an accident, no one will ever know.
And that’s disturbing.
Essential Item #5: The maxi. They are IT right now guys. If you only purchase one thing on this list, make it THIS ONE. I swear you will sleep in this thing. And wear it to church. And probably in the bathtub {I mean, throw a little laundry detergent in there and you’ll win awards for your multi-tasking abilities} I’m serious.
OK. Brainwash complete.
Go shop my pretties. And you can tell those men-folk I sentcha.
Missy says
Definitely needing the last one and can those brown boots be a part of the essential list also, because I would love an excuse to buy them! Great ideas, Sydney – love it!
Stacy says
Cute stuff, but the first ones, well, I have always thought people look like they are walking on stilts, hilarious!!!
makana hansen says
I was just g-chatting with my SIL about how she can re-vamp her closet on a student budget. THIS IS PERFECT! Thank you.
And LOVE the green eggs in ham edit 🙂

Janessa says
Great list! And I love those peep toes with the floral dress and skirt. I need a pair JUST like those
Angie says
I am 5’9″ (and wear a size 2) and have an extrememly hard time finding pants in my size, especially ones that are long enough. I would die for a pair that fit me that long! You always look so stinkin’ amazing!
Leanna says
I am in the same boat as you except 5’10. Victoria Secret makes pants in a 36 inseam, which I what I wear. (They make clothes amazing I know!) but they have the cutest pants in long lengths! Try their website!
Angie says
Thank you!!!!
Gloria H. says
Try Alloy or Crule Girl both have LONG inseams. I’m 6’0″ and always have trouble finding jeans!
Gloria H. says
I meant Cruel Girl
Peggy says
I love slightly flared bottomed jeans…. because at 5’2″ and a very chunky curvaceous body I need all the help I can get. One does have to be careful because if you are on the short side w/ lots of curves and hips that go on FOREVER you might end up looking like you have stumpy elephant legs…. (proof in pictures which have now been burned…) love the maxi skirt too but same issue.. 🙁
any advice for the short chunky monkies?
Gina A. says
this is a great start for a fashion-for-dummies kind of person like moi. thanks!
stacy says
Love them all!
Nicole says
Cute post! Can you please tell us where you got ALL of your stuff???
Adrienne says
Sydney has a blog called tandsdaybook.blogspot.com and she posts photos of her outfits (including these ones) with a list of where she gets everything from. If you go back through some of her recent posts, all these outfits are on there!
Summer says
Love the shrunken blazer you’re wearing! And I love maxi skirts but I’m only 5’2″ and can’t ever find them in a length that I won’t trip on or get caught in my heels! Would love to know where the dress is from too!
Also, you need to do a “belt tutorial”! I love how you just loop them in unconventional ways but mine never look the same. I know, I sound lame (I can’t loop a belt right, lol) but I love wearing belts so this is important stuff!
Zipdinger says
I’m 5’4″ and always have great luck finding long skirts/dresses in a length that works for me at Target!!:)
Tatum says
Where is the Maxi from????
Kathy Stephenson says
I enjoy reading these posts, but I don’t always agree with them. I guess if I was 10, 15, maybe even 20 years younger. At 46 most of this isn’t going to work for me or my shape. I think both of those things need to be taken into consideration when putting together a wardrobe. A shrunken jacket on a woman that is not slim enough to wear it, or who’s hips are too large would just be a waste of money if she purchased it. Floral on me just doesn’t work…never has, I’ve tried. I’d love nothing more than to be able to wear heels again, but after years of wearing them I’m now seeing a podiatrist to help my poor aching feet. Nothing a cortisone shot and a good arch can’t heal. I guess what I’m saying in this “Speak Your Mind” is that every woman needs to look at herself in the mirror, try things on….ask herself honestly “Does this really work for ME?”…and if it does, then make it an essential piece of your wardrobe.
rebecca l. says
Kathy – EXACTLY!! I am only 30 so I can still pull off a lot of that, but for goodness sake can someone please do fashion for the slightly older, to the later year, set. Now that would be brilliant.
Karen says
I share your thoughts too. I am 48 this year and I never need to go near anything with the word “shrunken” in it. LOL Blazers or sweaters that are long help my ample hips look slimmer. Anything shorter and I look like a bell pepper on toothpicks! LOL

Oh my gosh! Where did you get the floral print dress?!! I must get it!!
Nesleirbag says
I think the main purpose of this fashion post is to help springboard ideas for us to adapt to our own age, body-type, etc. You get my creative juices going, Sydney! We can be a fashionista at any age, right?
Brittney P says
Just curious, where do you shop? Seriously, every outfit pictured was adorable…I have definitely learned from yoU!!
Adrienne says
check her blog! She posts everything she wears on there and where she gets them from: tandsdaybook.blogspot.com
Kathy Stephenson says
@Nesleirbag…that’s exactly what I meant at the end of my post when I stated, “that every woman needs to look at herself in the mirror, try things on….ask herself honestly “Does this really work for ME?”…and if it does, then make it an essential piece of your wardrobe.” The heading of Sydney’s post was “5 Things You Should Have In Your Closet Right Now”…and if I had her shape (and I wish I did!) I would have those things. Many of my friends can wear those items, I was simply saying that I, and probably many others that read this site just can’t. The idea of a splash of color? Absolutely! The floral print? Not so much for me, but I can add a touch of floral in a brooch perhaps. What we can do is find what does work for us, and make it an integral part of our wardrobe.
Nesleirbag says
Right on, Kathy! I agree!
Bluebell says
Would love to know where the handbag in #5 is from!
Jini says
I’d also like to know where the handbag came from! Very practical.

Love…love…love all these items, but please let us know where you got them including the nude shoes in #3 & #4…blazer in #1.
Bethany says
Hahaha!! Yer hilarious. 🙂 I respect your decision to sleep and bathe in a maxi dress (lol!), but personally the one thing on this list that I know I MUST have is something floral … I hope I can find a floral dress this season. So many dresses are really, really short on me (probably ’cause I’m 5’10”). And I really would prefer if no one but me and my hubby saw my (cute) undies. 😀
kelsey says
3 out of 5 ain’t bad! 🙂
Leanna says
the floral dress! where is it from??
Lisa says
I love each one! I would really love to have nr. 5 for church/home/bathtub…

Been thinking about that maxi….now it’s a done deal…thanks 🙂
Cathy says
Thanks for the great advice and the laugh-out-loud comments! You make my day!
Allison says
Side notes: for the Maxi make sure is a solid neutral color, cause if not you’ll only really have a few things to wear it with.
Next paycheck I’m off to get a black maxi, and white skinny jean. I have all theese shirts that would be perfect with white skinnies, or a comfy maxi, and some sort of casual blazer.
