Easter might still be a month away, but this is a floral arrangement you’ll want to bookmark for your Easter decorations. Or if you want to bring a spring garden inside your home, this is the perfect project. I’m excited to share with you a floral terrarium do it yourself! This is a fun away to display cut flowers, potted flowers and/or succulents all in one botanical oasis. And the great thing is that the beauty will hold longer than you think!
How is a floral terrarium different from a green terrarium? Well in this project, we are using cut flowers mixed with potted flowers and succulents. So a floral terrarium will not last as long as a green terrarium, which can last for months, but longer than a bouquet of flowers.
Here’s what you need to make your spring garden oasis!
- glass jars, glass bowls, circular bowls, glass cloches–really any glass container you can find will work!
- fresh flowers
- potted flowers
- succulents
- floral foam brick (one that absorbs water)
- soil
- real moss
- scissors
I went around my house and gathered all my candy jars to use in his project. While I did that I soaked my floral foam brick in water for about 15-20 minutes. Take your fresh flowers and cut to a desired height. Flowers I used: tulips, ranunculus, daffodils, hyacinth
With your glass jar and put enough soil at the bottom of it to level out the jar. Before you place your floral foam in the jar, punch holes (not all the way through) in the foam with your scissors so the flowers can drink properly. Then place your floral foam brick in the jar (cut to proper size to fit in the jar) on top of the soil.
Flower by flower, build your arrangement creating different heights on the foam. Place a little succulent plant to one side of the foam. Add a small potted flower to the other side of the foam. Once you are satisfied with your jar, gently cover with a little more soil. Then add the finishing look with fresh moss covering the foam and soil.
Replace your glass jar top and you done! Easy as that and a pretty sight to see.
I had so much fun creating this project that I took other glass containers I had laying around the house and made additional floral terrariums. I had a few containers without tops so these are open-face terrariums. The difference is you can create some height and not have to cut down some of your flowers and add more potted tall flowers like tulips. I love how organic it looks with the exposed soil.
Happy fun creating your floral terrariums!

So beautiful! Do you water these or is the wet green spongy thing enough water? If you do need to water them, how much and how often?
Thanks!

How long do the fresh flowers last? What potted flower species would you recommend?
Darleen says
The fresh flowers last about a week. The potted flowers last about three weeks and the succulents can last up to three months. Once the fresh flowers died, I pulled them out and enjoyed the potted flowers/succulents. For the potted flowers I used tulips and hyacinth. And yes I did water the plants.
