Gold is making a huge comeback in fashion, beauty and the interior design world.
If you ask my kids, they will tell you that gold is my favorite color. Gold can pretty much go with anything.
I remember when we bought our first home in 2003 every door knob, faucet and kitchen item had to be stainless steel. Even my jewelry had to be silver.
Absolutely NO gold.
A lot has changed since then. Now I only wear gold jewelry, I decorate my house with gold, and my clothes and makeup always have a touch of gold.
I even bought gold knobs for my kitchen–they could possibly be my favorite part of the kitchen.
Knob information here.
Lately I have been looking for the perfect gold eye shadow and I haven’t had much luck. Then, I found a website called DIY Cosmetics and I really hit the jack pot. I found everything I needed to make my own gold eye shadow.
Things you will need:
1. Mica
2. Powder Binder
3. Eye shadow compact
4. Spoon
MICA
Mica is the most common mineral found in mineral makeup and is found in all eye shadows. Mica has been used as a cosmetic for thousands of years.
It is really cheap and really messy so be prepared. Especially, don’t work with mica around your favorite rug.
This color is Gold Royal and it was $4.50 for 1 ounce. You can also buy samples for $1.25.
For more information click here.
POWDER BINDER
Pour the mica into a bowl and spray the powder binder onto it.
By spraying the powder binder on the mica, it will help the minerals stick together.
I bought the powder binder for under $8.
Scoop the minerals out of the bowl and put them in the eye shadow container. Use the back of a spoon to pack the minerals down in the container.
IMPORTANT TIPS
1. If you are going to combine different colors you will need a mini-grinder or plastic bag to mix them together. Pour them into a bowl after you are done mixing them and spray powder binder on the minerals in the bowl.
2. Allow the minerals to dry completely.
3.Test a small amount of the eye shadow on the back of your hand before putting it on your eyelid to make sure your skin doesn’t have a reaction.
I have to admit this was so fun but so messy. I suggest having baby wipes close by to clean up any messes and use a plastic table cloth that you can throw away after. My 9 year old was helping me and we both wore aprons.
This would be such a fun girls night activity. You can also make extra for your family and friends in their favorite color for birthday gifts.
I am definitely not a make up artist but I think my eye shadow turned out fabulous.
Have I convinced you that going gold is refreshing and hip?
Just remember you don’t have to do everything gold. You can start by using Essie Good As Gold nail polish and give yourself a manicure or pedicure.
What gold accessory will you be buying this Valentines day to brighten up your look?
The Real Person!

I love gold too! I like to change it up though and with certain colors. I like to wear silver with gray, black (gold too), blue and turquoise. I like to wear gold jewelry and makeup with red, orange, pinks, yellow, greens and browns. I loved the idea of making your eye shadows. It is so expensive now and it would be fun to give for gifts. Where did you get your containers or did you just save your old ones? Thanks so much!

I remember looking around a few years ago and seeing that gold was back. I was probably a little behind the times, but I’m glad I finally got the message. Gold is gorgeous! Especially on the eyes.

Where did you get the binder? I looked on the DIY Cosmetics website and I can’t find it. I have some loose eye shadows I would love to make solid. They are so messy loose, but I love the colors!

Hi Cris,
I bought it from DIY cosmetics. It was $8 for the bottle you see In the pictures above. Its called liquid binder.
