3 Metal Magnet Board
Bring on the metal. This sheet metal that needs a little less ‘out of the factory’ look.
It’s nice and shiny, but I don’t want that.
I fell the need to ‘un’shine it…give it some personality and poke some holes in it to hang it and give it a home.

Your job is to ‘un’shine metal.
I got this weird looking thing at the hardware store. I don’t recall asking them for a specific weird looking thing, just something that could buff my metal. This is what I was led to. You just put it in your drill and off it goes.
Place it on the metal and it will make swirling ‘scratches.’ A hint: Make sure to hold the metal down firmly so it doesn’t twirl around and whack you…that hurts. I know. I learned.
Punch holes in the corners.
You can use a drill bit and drill your metal or if you have this crop a dile it will come in handy.
It’s a cool tool, it will punch though metal. I wasn’t a believer until I tried it. It went through metal.
SO much faster and cleaner than a drill bit, but use what you have…or convince your husband that this will make his life easier somehow:)
Pull some ribbon through the holes. I seriously need to trim that ribbon on the left.
Do you see the metal? Do you see the swirls? If not, don’t give up, keep looking at the rest of the pics. You’ll see it soon.
To make it easy to hang, I put two holes closer to the top center and strung ribbon though it.
It made it easy to hang.
Tie two and then three.
A fun idea for school pictures, to do lists, or just some cute pictures of nieces.
The metal is a thick gage. It doesn’t need to be super thick, just think enough that it will stand and not curl. You can get the cheaper metal because you will be ‘buffing’ it anyway.
Look for metal shops in your phone book…really…we are techie now, look it up on the internet:)
We are linking up to these parties…thanks ladies

Thanks for this! I was searching last week for ways to make my own metal magnet board.
Rochelle says
Can I just commission you to make me one?! 🙂

That is so cute! I love that idea! 🙂 And you could change out the ribbon for different times of year, or different rooms! 🙂 Fun!

Monica says
would they sell this metal at a regular hardware store or do we need to find a metal shop?? I HAVE to make one of these! =)

Check to see if they carry them. I’ve only been able to get them at the metal shop. It’s worth checking.:)

I’ve purchased sheet metal at Lowes in the plumbing section, it was only 7.50 for a huge piece.

I have seen metal sheets at the dollar store, one side has a terrible painting but I was thinking of covering it with scrapbook paper. And it would be super cheap!

I have gotten smaller peice at Home Depot.
I made Yo-yo covered magnets to hold some pics on the covered metal board I made.
I like this one better. Think I will have to try it this weekend so my DD will finally be happy.

That’s really nice! Thanks so much for the idea, I’ll be linking.

I want one! I can never get enough places to put up snap shots!
Holly McD says
This idea is so cute! Did you do anything about the sharp edges of the metal? Or does this reside in the ‘adults-only’ area of the house? 🙂

Alison says
I actually did a bit of sanding on the corners to reduce the sharpness, but I still would keep them up from my toddlers:)

This is so timely for me — I have a large magnet board I’m making, and I was unsure of how I wanted to “treat” the metal… ie paint? leave it? And I LOVE this burnished metal look you did! Thanks for sharing. Just one question — does that brush have an actual name? Or should I just ask the hardware people like you? (I was actually gonna send the hubby to do buy it… that’s why I need to ask.) Thanks!
Alison says
Ya…send your husband:) I don’t know what the official name is. I wish I did, but I just asked them for something that would leave swirls in my metal. I know I am real technical. Good thing they were nice:)
Laura says
So, I did send him… The name is “Metal Cup Brush”. There were different sizes — 2″, 3″, 4″ (We bought 3″). And different “grits” (fine or coarse — we bought coarse). Ours was a Black and Decker brand, found at Home Depot.

This is CUTE,CUTE,CUTE! Love this idea. So easy!
Jannan says
How do you cut your metal. I’ve used the metal snips before, but my edges always end up jagged looking. Do you have better way?
Alison says
Ya. I have the metal guys do it:) Mine were too jagged also. So I pay a little extra for a smooth cut. Totally worth it to me.

What a wonderful idea! I woke up super early a couple of days ago thinking about a craft I want to do using sheet metal. Glad to see that it’s easy to procure and I really like how you distressed it! Brilliant!

This is really clever! I especially like that you showed how to punch the holes. I need to convince hubby he needs one of those. Somehow. haha. Thanks!
