Use Your Noodle! Quick (and cheap!) spring butterfly decor

Every year I say I’m going to do a better job at decorating for spring time. It seems like every year I get too busy and decorating gets pushed to my mental low priority list. Well, not this year because I’m using my noodle…..literally! Yes, I busted out a box of bow tie pasta and spaghetti noodles and created a little bit of spring decor for my home. Quick. Easy. Cheap. Sounds like my kind of project.

Here’s what you will need to create a little butterfly springiness in your own home:

bow tie pasta

spaghetti noodles

hot glue gun

paint and small paint brushes

thin wire (for the antennas)

skewer sticks

small pliers

mini flower pots (I found mine at my local Walmart for .33!)

dried green peas (used to fill the flower pots)

Let’s get started! Lay out several of your bow tie pastas on a paper towel. Get out your paints and brushes. Make sure you have your favorite spring time colors!

Here’s a side-by-side comparison of the back of the bow tie pasta (left) and the front side of the bow tie pasta (right). You will want to paint on the front side.

Get to painting those noodles! I used a acrylic paint and it dried super fast.

Get a couple spaghetti noodles out and break them into 3/4″ pieces. Then paint the pieces. These will be the body of your butterflies.

Add some details to your bow tie pasta. I found that a q-tip made for a great polka dotter.

While the paint dries, you can make your antennas. I used some simple white thin wire I already had on hand at my home. I think silver wire would look just as cute. Use what you can find around your home.

Cut your wire into 1 1/2″ pieces and use pliers to twist the ends to make the antennas.  The best way to explain the twist is to pretend you are curling your hair with a curling iron. I promise it will make for perfect antenna curls. 😉

It will look like this after you do both ends.

Fold your wire in half so that your curls curve to the outer sides.

Break out the hot glue gun and remember – a little goes a LONG way with these noodles. Just a little dot in the middle to attach your spaghetti noodle to your bow tie pasta. And just a smidge to attach the antenna to the spaghetti noodle.

While the hot glue is drying, go ahead and paint your flower pots. I love, love, love these little guys! I can’t believe this is the first year I’ve noticed the tiny size flower pots!

Fill your pots with green peas.

Now take your skewer sticks and stick them in the pot to see how much you need to break off of it to make it the height that you like.

For me, I thought I needed to get rid of about 1/3 of my skewer stick. No fancy tools. Just snap that baby where you need to.

Add a dot of glue to the tippy top of your skewer.

And attach it to the back side of your butterfly.

And that’s it. Butterflies made from noodles. Don’t you feel smart?!

Perfect for sitting in my kitchen window stile, brightening up my space making me feel all springy inside even though it’s seriously still cold outside where I live.
