Two thoughtful gifts under $1
Here’s a shout out to gifts that are cheap, useful and VERY thoughtful!
The first year my husband and I were married we were the typical newly weds, going to school, no income and blissfully happy! I would like to stress the no income part…
Going to school full time we didn’t have time to get real jobs and we thought eating pizza was a luxury.
When Christmas rolled around we gave each other a budget of $1 each to spend on Christmas Presents. The Christmas tree was a 2 foot Charley Brown Tree we cut out of my Dad’s back yard and decorated it with candy canes (that we got as a Neighbor Christmas Gift:)
A lot of thought went into this as we tried to ‘impress’ each other with our thoughtfulness.
We had a lot of fun trying to spend our money wisely.
After watching my husband eat a grapefruit with a regular spoon…my question was answered.
I ended up finding a grapefruit spoon for under a buck.
When he opened it up Christmas morning he laughed and was delighted that his life was going to be a ‘little easier’ now that he had his grapefruit spoon!
It was a fun Christmas…and we are still blissfully happy!
This is another fun gift that an Angel put on my porch about a month ago!
This year I have had to take all Dairy out of my diet due to a nursing baby’s dietary restrictions. This means taking some staples out of my diet including brownies, cheese, milk or any other dairy product. I’ve been trying all my life to cut down on sweets, but when I had to totally take them away I began to dream about them:)
In my quest for something creamy and sugary…I found non-dairy FROSTING! It’s a little embarrassing to admit, but it tastes wonderful out of the can! Normally it might not taste as good, but when you’re deprived of something…it just tastes good!
Whoever was listening the day I mentioned my new love for Creamy Supreme should get the Friend of the Year award. I still don’t know who left it there, but stitting on my porch glistening in the sunlight was a can of Coconut Pecan Frosting with a white plastic spoon dangling from a beautiful red ribbon.
It didn’t take me long to eat it, but to know that someone was listening and made my day a little sweeter, this present is on the top of my best gifts ever received list!
By the way, when my baby is done nursing I will be having a ‘dairy party’ and admission is something with dairy in it!
Gift giving this season doesn’t have to be full of ‘stuff’…just thought and a little preparation.
On Monday, we are going to start Christmas traditions.
We are going to give you ideas to do with your family that require little or no money, but will hopefully help you create some great memories with those you love!
Let us know what are some of the best gifts you’ve received?

This was a sweet post alison! Tugged at my heartstings! -Brad and I are doing the THREE gift exchange recommended here https://howdoesshe.com/2009/11/simpler-gift-giving/. I am so excited about the “treasure”. Simple, meaningful gifts are the best.

I can sympathize (and WISH I knew about the non-dairy frosting!) — I breastfed my 2nd for a year on the non-dairy diet. And I too dreamed about desserts 🙂 Actually, I found out that a lot of brownies don’t have milk in them! Including those “two bite brownies” they have at some grocery stores. Sooooo goood! Hang in there — I found out that once I went back on dairy, my body didn’t really like it either (and I’ve kept the 25 lbs. off that I lost!)

So what did he give you?!

I knew someone was going to ask about this:) I tried to think, but I was so wrapped up in getting him his perfect present that I don’t remember what he gave me. Sad..I know. I even asked him if he remembered and he didn’t!

Unknown to me, two of my daughters gathered my material scraps from the last 40 years and made a patchwork quilt for me! I would laugh, then I would cry, remembering each little piece and what it represented in that gorgeous quilt! Priceless!
