We need your help!
You see, while we’ve been working hard to make great content for HowDoesShe, the site ‘logo’ (if you even call it that) has gone a bit, ummm, STALE. {We thought it looked great when we started the site, but soooo much has happened since then}.
Just this past week I played around with this new idea header and button, but I’m just not sure about ANYTHING anymore…
So,….Yesterday we launched a design competition for a new Logo for our Website. After seeing the entries, we realized we need input from the people who know HowDoesShe and love HowDoesShe. That’s You! We need you to help shape HowDoesShe.com!
So how can you help?
There are a few ways (and you don’t even have to be a designer):
1. The most simple way would be to post a comment here, telling us what you think the HowDoesShe logo should represent. What are some adjectives that describe our site? Do you like the question mark {we kind of feel like it is our ‘nike’ sign}? Do you like current color scheme?
2. If you think you have an eye for design, check out our current design competition and let us know which entries you like, or dislike and why. Make sure to include the coordinating design #. Do you prefer our old design or my attempt at the new design? {I am not claiming to be a designer}.
3. If you have any ideas, please please please hop over to 99Designs, read the brief, and submit your logo design. We need a strong logo and we would really LOVE to give the prize money to a HowDoesShe fan. Up for grabs is $310 to the winner!
4. Do you have any creative family or friends? If you know anyone who would be interested in submitting, send this info to them!
HowDoesShe is really all about you. We love our readers. Lots. We really can’t wait to hear what you think, and incorporate that into who we become. Thanks for your participation in this. 🙂
—
P.S. Please, If you don’t have anything kind, or a positive constructive comment to say, don’t say it at all. We are trying hard to keep this an uplifting blog with uplifting conversation. Thank you for understanding! 🙂

You guys should check out http://www.themodernpolkadot.com/ Kathy is a design genius. I found her via someone else’s blog & will probably have her design some stationary for my kids. I love her work.

I like Design #48 by “msartemis”. Modern & Chic.
Mystery Blue says
I really enjoy this site, I live in México, and well alot of these ideas are not seen around this area. So I enjoy seeing all the diferent ideas that are posted here and soon I will be trying them out myself.
koudos to all.
Sarah E. says
that’s hard! Most of those ideas don’t really stand out to me! I don’t think there is anything wrong with what you have now, but it is kind of nice/fun to change it up a little now and then.
Out of the ones already submitted, I like 15 and 46 best.
Carol @ FrugalLifeProject says
Hi. I read your blog and I’m a graphic designer so I will be sure to come up with an idea and submit it! I have been designing logos for 10 years. You can see some of them here: http://www.projectmac.com
Thanks a bunch!
Carol

Yay!! Can’t wait to see it.

Please, Please! I just checked our your link – you are wonderful!!!

I love #36 in the designs. I’ll keep thinking for you ladies. 🙂
Kelly says
logo design contests are offensive to real designers. it’s like hiring a builder to build you a house and you only pay for the one you like the best in the end. it cheapens the value of their work. just look around and hire the designer with your favorite portfolio.
Sarah H says
I totally disagree with you…it seems like you’re saying there’s no place for amateurs in design. This is a fun way for people who feel involved with and invested in this site to help give back to it, helping each other with creative ideas like we always do. If you are offended, don’t enter…but there’s NOTHING wrong with doing this, any more than there would be in using a high-priced couture designer garment for inspiration and DIY-ing a similar one for yourself.
My 2 cents.
Carrie J says
I agree with Sarah H. If you are offended by this contest, then don’t enter. These are the very kinds of opportunities that help people get started and get valuable experience. It also helps keep costs down. Not everyone can spend hundreds of dollars paying for a designer who may be overpriced to start with. An overpriced designer isn’t necessarily the one who comes up with the best design.
Kelly says
or like someone asking a hundred people to knock off the dress and only paying for the best knockoff. if they were doing it all in house and having no one else try it out and having people critique just their own work, i think that would be cool.
Sarah says
I can see your point, Kelly. I never finished design school (ran out of money, became a mom, etc.) but I have done logos on the cheap over the years. I remember when I was hired to help a friend, and after hours of investing time and effort, she found out her sign company would whip up one on the computer for free! I never had a chance to show my work, and I had more of a personal relationship with the type of business she was in, unlike the sign company. I think that’s what the gals here want: a reader’s opinion, since they look at it every day!

I agree with Sarah E. I like the one you have…none of the ones on that page stand out and then ones with the faces & eyes are creepy!
Shelley says
Ha! Don’t worry. No weird eyes will be showing up on our site! 😉
Amanda says
My favorites are #53 and 55. I think you girls are Beautiful like the letters in the design, creative, yet simplistic as you teach us how to do and create things. I LOVE these two so much! 🙂
Amie says
I must say I still love your current but if you must change…Here are some tips…? is that what we will call them… don’t go ENTIRELY different. Keep the black, black always looks good, in fact black always looks great. I saw some brown, don’t go there. too much brown everywhere, way to “trendy” I use the quotes because this is a bad trendy. 😉 Here is what I like so far…51 and 52 are good but I don’t like the 2-tone on the question mark…kinda weird. I like on 41 how it is off center, kind of like some of us on our best days 😉 28 is not bad but a no on the box around the word she…doesn’t look all together. 10 is also not bad but the “how does” is too plain, it doesn’t go either. 9 is my fave only because it has butterflies and it’s in turquoise or teal, whatever, I like that color. So I would def. vote for a black and teal design with girly/scripty letters. WOW! long story not so short! I hope some of these are helpful. I wouldn’t even know how to design one of these or maybe I could put all the good parts together for you… Good luck and I LOVE your site. I send everyone here first when they are looking for creative ideas. You girls are awesome. Thank you.
Shannon Spath says
I really like #45. It’s simple, feminine, and informative. I like what you have now too; but, I understand the desire for change. Your site is my “happy” place. I see your wonderful creations and recreate them with my own touches (paper choice, color, etc.). I wonder if your logo needs the word “creative” or “create” in it. When I think of your site, that’s what I think of. “Women-sharing-creative-ideas”

none are really making me go “oooh”, but I do like #27 the best

I really like #56 by ShayBocks! It’s simple and the question mark really stands out in a clean, fresh way! I wish there was a way to vote on 99Design… but at least I was able to tell you here.
Good luck in your search!

Seriously I like the design but black is too dark. Work with color and change that, but keep the design. Bigmama.com is a site with a really cute, very different design that I love.
judi says
I really like the current logo! IF, and that is a big IF, I were to change anything….I would only make the pink a bit brighter….good luck! Don’t change too much, though, as we are all used to looking at that logo….elegant
and beautiful….just like you!
Shelley says
Thank you!!! Your comment is totally sweet. The more designs we see,…the more we like our original! But I do NOT claim to be a designer.
Bev says
None of them really stand out but out of all of them I like #48. I like the colors. It’s has a fresh look to it.
SarahAnne says
I am not a designer, nor do I pretend to be one, or pretend to have a good eye for anything…accept yummy food. However, the title “How Does She?” conjures up an image in my mind of a woman showing another woman how to do something. A cute graphic of two women by a sewing machine, one making cupcakes, doing something crafty, etc., is what I would try to come up with, if I even knew how to do any sort of design. Maybe it’s more than you want to mess with, but hey, it’s just a suggestion. 🙂
Jennifer says
I absolutely agree with you, SarahAnne. I feel like the Fabulous Three are hanging out in my living room letting me in on their best-kept secrets! How to translate that into a graphic? – not my area =)

At the risk of offending someone, when I look at most of those image, I’m reminded of sex toy parties. There’s something about the color scheme.
Your original design never made me feel that way.
In a completely different direction, I can see a retro housewife image with an exasperated look on her face asking “How does she?” Clearly you’re not that way, but the iront could be funny.
Shelley says
Ha! Funny, Funny. I assume you are talking about the HOT pink color schemes designers are trying? We HATE the hot pink {gag}. We feel the black with LIGHT pink has a classy feel to it. Thanks for your input. 🙂 I’m sure we will get a good laugh out of your comment at our weekly ‘meeting’. 🙂
cherylene says
I love the design already. The black and white w/the fleur de lis type stuff in the background. Maybe just changing the font cuter would be enough. I love what you have already…or add in 1 other color, pink, turquoise or red. But black and white is classy! I just bought an apron that looks much like your site already. I bought it at http://www.hiphostess.com.

When I saw what had been submitted so far (TOTALLY not you!), I went ahead and submitted one (#73). Hope you like it. 🙂 I don’t think you need a drastic change; it just needs to be spiced up a tad. I already love your existing color scheme. Love your website!
Kowanda says
I like design #49. It’s clean, not busy and follows your guidelines.
Emily @ Help Emily Lose Weight says
I have always thought it should be “How Does She…?” That makes more sense grammatically. One key word when I think of this site is “supermom”. When you think of people that can do amazing things and have great ideas and are moms they seem like supermom’s. I know not everyone who reads and contributes to this blog is a mom, but I am so that is what I think of.
I didn’t like any of the logos I saw in the competition. I think the one you have is clear and simple. maybe just a fun question mark to go with it.

Red Head says
I like the round one, that was shown for this post. I also like the one with three circles, shoe, question, and beater. I think the shoe should be replaced with a hammer, glue gun, or Silhouette though. The shoe leads more to fashion, which is rarely talked about on the site.
The butterfly one is also really nice, though I think I just like it because it’s pretty.
Susan says
I find the above comments interesting. The one thing that I have never really liked about your site is the black on the logo. Just always seemed too harsh for all of the bright, cheery, new and fun ideas that you come up with . I was surprised that so many of the new designs were just a variation of the old. I hope that your new design is full of color, which I think is more of a reflection of the site’s content.
Sarah E. says
I had to come back and check and I’m still not really drawn to the new ones… I do however, like the one you did! it’s super cute and seems like a subtle “upgrade.” I especially love the circle!! good luck 🙂
Michele says
LOVE #56 the best…simple and CUTE!
Diane says
I LOVE #87 because it shows the different strengths each of you have and the different projects that we can follow. Also, I believe, #94 (???-I forgot to write down the number) that has the question mark.
Procella says
I REALLY love the design you did much, much more than any of the ones submitted. The only change I would make is just a “smidge”, and I really mean just a little, itty bit more space between the bottom of the stylized
“She” and the top of the “women . sharing . ideas” line. Can you just get someone to recreate what you did, so that it will be “professional” as you hope for?
For what it’s worth, I really, really, really dislike the logos with the female gender symbol. If you HAVE to choose from what’s submitted, my fav’s are #24 by one-two (first choice) and #37 by C&G (second choice).
I’m really curious – why did you decide to emphasize “she” instead of “does”? To me, and this is just MHO, “How Does SHE?” sounds more like “how does THAT girl do it? I would expect it from someone else, but her?” Whereas “How DOES She? sounds like “how does she do all that cool stuff? How does she make it happen? I wish I were more like her…” So, how do you intend for it to read?
Love your site – thank you ladies so much for all the good work you do!!!
Shelley says
Aw Thanks! I’m starting to trust my eye a little bit more after hearing these nice comments. 🙂 We focused on ‘SHE’ because of the feminine word. It was VERY interesting to hear your outlook on that though. I had never looked at it the way you had described ‘reading it’. Something to think about. Thank you soo much for your input. 🙂

I just want to say that I love your current design. In fact, the whole site (the colors and font) all work together so nicely.
But if you want to know, I have three choices. I really like #88 by artinsoul. The butterfly is a nice touch with the dots leading into the ? mark. It has good symmetry.
#79 by sweetlove…I love the colors and the simplicity. It’s got the contemporary feel coupled with the vintage frame.
#62 by sweetlove…same basic design but this one has the silhouette. Very pretty.
Good luck on making your decision!
miyoko says
I think you need to cut them some slack. The three women behind this blog are new at this. They had some ideas of what they wanted. I imagine that it would be difficult to get one’s ideas across without an actual interview where the designer is asking questions and getting a real feel for the blog and their personalities. So they said pink. Then after seeing some hot pink, they said no hot pink. Are they supposed to say every shade of pink that’s ok or not ok?
99 designs specifically instructs one to write a clear outline of what’s wanted and to provide continual feedback. If you don’t like the way it’s done and feel insulted and devalued, then why participate in the contest when you clearly understand that you are up against dozens of other designers? If you really want to win the contest, you should take the constructive criticism offered and change the designs. That’s called listening to your client.

I really like #122. I like the white, clean look though. I am not sure that it works the best for you guys, but that is my personal favorite.

Ladies,
Black and pink????
Do not love the colors, I would prefer Pink and Black. Also, to further identify your brand, I would add your pictures … after all it is your blog!!
Finally, I would prefer more whimsy on your design.
Just a thought from a reader.
Good luck.

In the logo contest I like #197
The pink and black seem to express your site the best, but 197 is clean and still fun
Amy says
After looking at the new logo ideas, I think I like the current one best. To me, the emphasis should be on the word “Does” not “She”. The current logo seems to put the emphasis slightly on “Does”. In my head when I think of the title, it is “how DOES she” not “how does SHE” do that. I also think some of the logos remind me of “Sex in the City”. I actually really like the current design, but I am sure whatever you pick will be great because the three of you have an amazing site. I am so happy to have found “you”! Thanks for all the awesome ideas so far!!!
Laura H says
I think the design you have now is just right. I also like the circle design in this blog. I really wouldn’t do much to it. 🙂

My pick is 160 – I love the pink and the words are easly seen and readable. Keep up the great work – I love checking out the site – it gives me a smile and i reread lots of the same articals and totorials regularly I always see something new – We are throwing our annual pig roast and i would love to see invites that are not holiday and ideas for everyday kid stuff to do.

I like the choices of #62, #79, and #204. I think that the color palette needs to be different for 62 and 79. But I LOVE # 204. It is clean, Crisp, and immediately drew my eyes directly to it. It stood out the most out of 4 pages of entries.

I like the circle – the black is different than most others. Best wishes to you on your logo decision….I will visit your blog no matter what it looks like!

Personally I like the existing set up, but if I had to choose a new logo I’d run with #175 by justingabrielle because it appeals to my sense of design, it’s modern and easily remembered, uses the same overall colour scheme, ie monochromatic but with the addition of some bright colour tiles to liven it up!
