For some reason, when it comes to autumn, I HAVE to dress in autumn colors. I look at my closet and can’t fight the feelin’ to wear warm, fun, seasonal colors. I also love accessorizing in the fall. This is not a normal thing for me. I’m just a keep-it-simple dresser. The other seasons don’t inspire me the same way. This year I’ve been having so much fun making things to wear.
Last weekend my friends (YO HENS!!) and I had our annual girls weekend in New Hampshire. It was fabulous as expected. On Sunday we always chill out, eat yummy food, and do some kind of project. This year I brought my stash of ric rac and ring blanks along with some felt, burlap and pin backs that I got at the local craft/fabric store. It’s no secret that ric rac, burlap and felt are super popular right now. I can always find inexpensive burlap and felt but I found some ric rac for a killer deal on pick your plum and jumped on it!
There are tutorials all over the internet on how to make these. I’ll give you links instead of recreating the tutorial. The great part is that each of these flowers took only 15 minutes to make from start to finish….except the huge dahlia. It takes a while because you have to cut out about 30 petals, but it’s not hard.
Take a look, you’re going to love these! Let’s start with ric rac rosettes. They are so fun and make the best chunky rings in every color you can come up with! Here’s the link ! Awesome tut Crafting Chicks! Here’s what we came up with…
I think this one had to be my favorite. I wasn’t so sure how the two colors of purple would look together but I really love it. I would love to wear it! Unfortunately that’s not one that I made and it lives in Mississippi with it’s rightful owner, Melissa, so borrowing it isn’t going to happen.
Check out some of the other flowers we made!
Don’t I have talented friends? There are several varieties of flowers here, both in ric rac and felt. Pop a pin back on any of these and pin it to your shirt, jacket, or bag and you’re good to go. A grouping of them also make a fun splash on throw pillows. Here are the tutorials for the ric rac daisy, rick rack chrysanthemum, felt dahlia, and the ruffled flower. If you don’t see something you like in any of the links just do a search and go nuts. There are a million choices. They’re all pretty simple and fun to make. I have to mention CHEAP. Even the Dahlia was made for 27 cents. 27 CENTS, you ask? Yes. Just one piece of felt and circle of cardboard cut from my cereal box. This is how simple they are: last Sunday I was wishing that I had a brown felt flower to wear to church. You have to understand that I don’t do ANYTHING spontaneous before church. I figure there will be enough adventure once we get there. No need to start early, you know? But surprisingly, the kids were basically ready and fed, so in about 10 minutes I made a brown ruffled flower and my clothing suddenly looked like an outfit. Amazing.
Moving on to burlap. I’ve done a few burlap projects lately and you won’t be surprised to hear that some of them are flowers. This one is my favorite. I just used this tutorial for rolled fabric flowers and I really like the shaggy look of the burlap.
Okay, the burlap flower below still needs work. I’ll just be honest, not my fave. However I really like the way the center turned out so I’m sharing the homely little thing anyway. You know how sometimes you need a center for a flower and a button is the right shape and size and will hold everything together, but you’re not really going for that crafty button look? Instead of sewing the button to keep the flower layers together, I used mini-brads usually used for paper crafting. I like it and may use the idea again on a more attractive item.
But I can’t leave you with that uninspiring item. So here you go, one last dose of inspiration. Ahhhh.
Yummy, right? So spend your 27 cents and your 15 minutes and ENJOY!
