Ten years ago when my husband and I were just newlyweds trying to figure out our place in the world, a letter arrived in the mail. On professional letterhead read the words, “Dear Zachary, Congratulations, you have been accepted to the University of St. Augustine Doctor of Physical Therapy program.”

Four weeks later, we sold most of our meager belongings in a garage sale, packed our old Honda Accord to the brim, and set off on a terrifying adventure literally across the country to live in a city we knew absolutely nothing about for the next three years of our lives.

Now St. Augustine, Florida is one of the most dear places to my heart. Not only is it a fantastic place to live, but it is an amazing vacation getaway! In fact, St. Augustine should be on everyone’s vacation bucket list. Best yet, it’s in the United States and is just a hop, skip, and a jump away from any airport! St. Augustine is a perfect family vacation, couples retreat, or girls trip.

15 Reasons You Should Visit St. Augustine, Florida {Tips from a Local}

1. It’s the oldest city in the nation.

St. Augustine is rich in U.S. history, in fact it is the nation’s oldest city founded in 1565 making it over 450 years old!

Although Christopher Columbus gets credit for discovering the Americas, it was the Spanish explorer Ponce de León who first explored the coasts of Florida and called the flowering peninsula “La Florida.” In 1565, Spanish admiral Pedro Menéndez founded St. Augustine for the Spanish crown.

Even if you’re not a history buff, St. Augustine is fascinating. You’ll see Castillo de San Marcos, the old fort the Spanish used to defend the city in many bloody battles. You can go inside the fort ($10 for adults, free for kids 15 and under) and see how the soldiers lived there. You can explore the perimeter of the fort and watch the dolphins swimming in the inlet.

2. Only 2 Hours from Disney World and the coastal weather is amazing.

Because St. Augustine rests beautifully on the east coast of Florida, the weather is absolutely ideal. It’s warm with a nice coastal breeze. The average temperatures in May through October are between 75 to 80 degrees. Plus, it’s only two hours out of Orlando so you can either hit up the big attractions while you’re there, or take a relaxing break from Disney World with a little day trip to St. Augustine.

3. Historic downtown and St. George Street

As far as downtowns go, St. Augustine’s Historic District is nothing short of awe-inspiring. The buildings are original Spanish Colonial dating back to when the city was first founded. There is the impressive Lightner Museum which will transport you back to the late 1800s when it used to be the Alcazar Hotel and was often called “the castle of happy returns.”

You can walk down the famous St. George Street and visit the many shops and eateries and drink in the culture of another era. If you go, make sure to visit Kilwins of St. Augustine for the best ice cream of your life. The toasted coconut is my favorite!

If it’s your first time visiting St. Augustine, take a trolley tour or a walking tour of the historic district. There are even haunted tours at nighttime!

4. Drink from the Fountain of Youth.

The fountain of youth is a natural spring that is told to restore the youth of anyone who drinks from it. Ponce de León was told by the Native Americans that a spring in what is now the original site of St. Augustine had the powers to reverse age.

Ponce de León’s Fountain of Youth is a huge attraction today and you can not only visit the archeological park, but you can drink from the mythical waters. (Just to forewarn you…it’s a stinky little sip!)

5. Flagler College

The real show-stopper of St. Augustine’s Historic District, Flagler College is a private four-year liberal-arts university founded by Henry Flagler in 1968. The campus is utterly breathtaking. The Centerpiece of the college, and the focal point of the city really, is the old Ponce de León Hotel, built in 1888 as a luxury hotel.

And luxury it is. Aspiring Spanish architecture and lush palm trees welcome you into the courtyard and give you the reverent impression that this place is steeped in history. You can take daily tours in the summer months and experience Flagler College for yourself.

6. Haunted stories

Along with a rich history comes haunted tales of ghosts and unexplained mysteries. Old human bones are still being discovered in St. Augustine. The skeletons of original colonists are buried deep under buildings and the old cemeteries in the Historic District are very cool to see.

To hear some of the haunted stories, take an after-hours ghost tour!

7. Spanish Colonial Architecture

Your camera will go crazy with all of the old buildings and beautiful Spanish architecture that dates back to when St. Augustine was first colonized. You’ll quickly fall in love with this unique city.

8. Warm, beautiful beaches

In my opinion, every perfect vacation must include a beach and St. Augustine beaches will not disappoint! You can travel up and down A1A stopping at beautiful beach after beautiful beach along the way.

The kids can surf, body board, or just play in the surf. You can build sand castles or just bask in the warm sun and listen to the waves crash along the shore. If you time it just right, you can watch local surfers catching waves.

9. Incredible eats

Hands down, the most amazing food I’ve eaten is in St. Augustine and the locals will agree with you. You could eat at a new restaurant every night of your vacation and still not see the best of what St. Augustine cuisine has to offer. You’ll find incredible fresh sea food cooked with bold flavors to perfection. You’ll experience tropical beach eats and cool dining atmospheres. Nearly every restaurant you visit has live music and a jamming scene. Here are some of my favorite places to check out:

10. World famous golf

If you’re a fan of golf, you’ll love the St. Augustine area. The PGA headquarters resides in Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida, only a 30 minute drive from St. Augustine. Every year, The Players Championship is held at Sawgrass in Ponte Vedra. You can buy tickets to watch professional PGA players compete in these major championship. It’s one of my favorite events to attend.

It’s amazing to watch your favorite golfers like Ricky Fowler and Phil Mickelson up close and personal.

11. Shopping, shopping, and did I mention shopping?

To make any vacation complete, a girl’s gotta shop. St. Augustine has two premium outlets that offer incredible shopping. Visit Kate Spade, Saks Fifth Avenue, and more at the St. Augustine Outlets. Right across the freeway you’ll find the St. Augustine Premium Outlets with GAP Factory, Nike, and Coach.

12. Cool night life

Night owls will want to stay out late with all of the fun night life atmospheres St. Augustine has to offer. Walk down St. George street in Historic Downtown or hit the A1A and see what’s hopping on the beach. There’s always plenty of live music and cool happenings.

13. Outdoor amphitheater & concert venue

Speaking of cool happenings, the St. Augustine Amphitheater is right on the beach and brings in plenty of cool performers like John Legend, Idina Menzel, and more. They even host a weekly farmer’s market there every Saturday morning.

14. Beautiful functioning lighthouse

The St. Augustine Lighthouse is a must-see if you’re in the area. This working lighthouse lights the sky every night and is open to the public during the day. You can climb to the top of the lighthouse and then visit the museum next door.

15. Magnolia Avenue: One of the most photographed streets in the USA.

Finally, as if you needed another reason to visit one of the coolest cities in the nation, make sure you see Magnolia Avenue, one of the most photographed streets in the United States. This gorgeous street is right by the Fountain of Youth and is sheltered by oak trees with draping Spanish moss. It is a beautiful sight to behold and one you won’t forget anytime soon.

So begin your exploration of the United States with the one place it all started: St. Augustine, Florida. History, delicious cuisine, beach relaxation, and even more adventures await you!

The shoes that everyone will ask “WHERE did you get those??” as they watch you cruise around in comfort. The outfits your man will be drooooooling over you in.

I’ve tried to pick things that are budget friendly (like this shirt we’ve talked about over and over as being perfect or THIS necklace which you’ll wear daily.) and threw in a few investment pieces as well. Either way, these items are fitting to just about any lifestyle and they’re ALL on sale (most 40% off). I didn’t get too crazy on you!

*We are so excited to be collaborating with Minute Maid again on their #doingood campaign which applauds parents like you and me for doing wonderful things–big and small–every day.

The day my family loaded our big brown Suburban with nearly all my personal belongings and stuck a sign in the back window that said, “College or bust!” my mom cried. I was the first of her five children to leave the nest and she felt the bandaid ripping off much faster than she’d expected.

Not only did she send me to my first university apartment with dozens of Tupperware dishes marked, “lasagna,” “tuna casserole,” and “beef stew,” but she sent care packages too. Every few weeks I’d get a sweet surprise in the mail. Sometimes it was pictures my younger siblings colored for me at home. Other times it was food, food, and more food. Once my parents sent me a “birthday in a box” care package because we couldn’t be together on my birthday. They’d carefully packed the box with balloons, confetti, streamers, a box of cake mix, a container of frosting, and candles so that I would feel loved on my special day.

To know that my parents were thinking of me even though I was far away meant more than I could ever verbalize. In fact, I don’t think I ever really told them how much those packages meant to me. Now I’m a mom of my own children and I understand completely and viscerally how much a parent can love a child.

Last year I was fortunate to introduce you to Minute Maid’s #doingood campaign which strives to shine a light on all the great things parents do for their families. This movement is very near and dear to my heart, as I now understand that parenting isn’t automatically lemonade. You have to squeeze a heck of a lot of lemons first.

Minute Maid believes that what’s true for juice is true for families – when you put good in, you get good out. That’s why they are reversing the tradition of the care package and giving back a little love and appreciation to a parent in your life who’s been #doingood.

Just like me, you’ve received a care package or two in your day. Maybe it was when you left home for college or summer camp. Maybe it was when you got a promotion at work or had a new baby. Parents everywhere stuff a lot of love into those boxes and then mail them to loved ones who are just out of a hug’s radius.

This year, Minute Maid is inspiring us all to tell parents they are #doingood by sending them a care package! It’s such a fun and sweet concept and we can’t wait to show you how to start.

You Turn Lemons into Lemonade

Each one of us HowDoesShe gals knows how tough it is to be a parent sometimes. We face tantrums when kids don’t get their way. We put our foot down when we’d much rather be kicking it up. We enforce curfews, patch up ouchies, and give lots and lots of hugs.

You could say that we parents take a big basket full of lemons, add a pinch of sugar, a drop of water, and turn those lemons into lemonade. And if we’re doing it for our kids now, you’d better believe our parents did it for us then. Even though we don’t often recall their every offering, we see their sacrifices much clearer now.

They took our lemons and turned them into lemonade.

To say thank you, we’re sending mom and dad a “Reverse Care Package” of all their favorite lemon goodies and an adorable printable Thank-You card you can have for FREE. Yup, completely free! We want your parents to know they’re #doingood and that they are pretty awesome.

Summer means a lot of fun, but it also means dropping some cash on a whole new wardrobe for those kiddos. I’m always shocked with I see the price tag on kids’ shoes. They’re often as much as mine! Insane. I was super excited when I saw this deal, and felt it was worth of a whole post I mean $5 kid shoes? And NOT from a yard sale??? Read on to see how I scored 2 pairs of summer sandals for kids for under $10!

Look how cute they are…..the shoes AND the little toes!

Maybe you’ve heard of Fab Kids? I had heard of it, but honestly, I often don’t pay too much attention to stuff like that. Then, I went shopping for my soon to be first grade twins. I was SO disappointed in the selection in stores. Honestly, most of the clothing i didn’t feel was super appropriate for my young daughters. Shorts that were too short. Shirts that had one too many emojis on them. I’m seriously SO sad we moved up from the toddler section because the selection just wasn’t great in my opinion. I thought I’d look into Fab Kids after a girlfriend raved about the clothes and shoes she gets there.

I found THIS DEAL, where they literally just give you $10 credit and thought “Might as well try it”.
I was SO happy I gave it a try.
I got two pairs of shoes for under $10 shipped!

Displaying FabKids-2017.jpg

I loved it so much, I went back for outfits for my girls. They’re twins, but boy could they be more different? They were able to pick their own style and the outfits they like the best.

Mom was happy because the price was right AND the styles were ones she’d even wear, but in little people sizes. They, in my opinion, were age appropriate and great quality.

Quick run down of how it works.

  1. You sign up as a VIP (this does require entering your CC information. Don’t worry.)
  2.  Use your initial $10 credit (Making shoes 2 for $9.95 shipped!) on shoes or an outfit. Note: Outfits come with several pieces. It’s an outfit, not just a one item purchase.
  3. Each month, you pay $29,95, which is applied toward credit of your clothing/shoes picks. $29.95 equates (for the most part) to one whole outfit. I honestly think this is GREAT value for a whole set! Think pair of jeans and a shirt and headband. You’re going to be spending at least that amount (probably more) at most stores and their clothes aren’t as darling as Fab Kids!!!

You can choose to skip any month you want, or several in a row. You’re not “locked in”. Visit your Fabshop between the 1st to 5th of the month to check out the latest outfits, and if you are not yet ready to make a purchase, simply click the Pink button that says ‘Skip’ the month located under Rewards Points. After you completed the process you will see a confirmation saying ‘You’ve Skipped’. If you happen to forget to skip, no worries, that money is not lost, rather applied as credit towards the next month.

    4. You can cancel at ANY TIME (even after you get your 2 shoes for $9.95 shipped if you want!), by calling Member Services Team at 1-855-FAB-KIDS. It’s quick (3 minutes) and painless. Promise.

I’m super happy with the quality of clothes I got at an affordable price. AND, any time I don’t have to step in a store, I’m all about it. Plus, my girls loved being able to pick out their own outfit each month! I love to see them defining themselves, and feeling beautiful on the outside (although their inside is more beautiful than ANY outfit!).

So, go ahead and try out Fab Kids. This isn’t sponsored, people. I’m really a huge fan, and 2 pairs of shoes under $10 shipped? I mean, you just can’t beat that!

They’re all the rage and if your kid doesn’t have one by now, they’ve at least begged for one.

Fidget spinners have caused a colossal tidal wave among children worldwide. Catherine Hettinger, the inventor of the globe’s most sought-after toy actually created the gadget 20 years ago. Why it’s spreading like wild fire now can only be explained by the same phenomenon that made Furbies and Beanie Babies so popular. Who knows why, but kids love ‘em and they bring their fidget spinners to school every day.

This is causing quite the disruption in classrooms, as you can imagine. What was meant as a therapy tool for the anxious, now fidget spinners are whipping and zooming during reading lessons and math exercises. Some classrooms have outlawed them already.

But that leads to the question of are these spinning toys distraction or therapy?

Distraction or Therapy?

By design, fidget spinners rely on equal weight distribution of ball bearings rotating around a central axis. They’re actually pretty cool. When my six-year-old son first bought one with his own chore money, I thought, “Well that’s stupid.” And then I spun it between my finger and my thumb…and spun it again and again. In a matter of seconds, I was hooked.

And it’s no wonder, fidget spinners are handy little aides for children and individuals suffering from all types of disorders. Fidget spinners are used in therapy to help those with autism, anxiety, and ADHD. The momentum of the toy provides sensory feedback and stimulation that is soothing to kids with developmental challenges.

In the classroom, a fidget spinner can help a hyperactive child focus. It can curb an anxiety attack and provide helpful stimulation for kids with autism. The problem is, everyone is bringing a fidget spinner to class, not just the children who need them. This causes lots of distractions and a heap of unhappy educators.

To Ban or Not to Ban

So should all fidget spinners be banned from schools? No one wants their child’s education being disrupted or worse, thwarted. It is annoying to think that your child can’t concentrate on his long division because the kid next to him is spinning a toy uncontrollably.

But what about the kids who really need them? If there’s a way to weed out the ones who don’t need them from the ones who truly could benefit from having a fidget spinner handy, great. As a mom of four, I can foresee many That’s not fairs! And as a former teacher, I know what a frustrating pill that is to swallow.

Bottom line: if you think your child could sincerely benefit from a fidget spinner, advocate for her. But if it’s about entertainment, save the fidget spinner for recess, or better yet—leave it home.

Fidget spinners are what long car rides and lengthy doctor’s visits were made for, I say.

I live with a big jock. Sports are always on. Sports are always being played. Even loading the dishwasher becomes a competition. It’s fun to see that love being instilled in my kids already as I feel like that sports can be an important addition to childhood (Read more about that HERE).

When I asked my husband want he was hoping for for Father’s Day (Yes, I’m one that asks….don’t judge;)), he responded “Sports stuff…like stuff I can wear and play sports with my kids with.”

*We are thrilled to team up with Nutella® for this delicious recipe that you make with your family.

Do you remember what it felt like as a kid to wake up on a Saturday morning? For me it was that twinge of excitement when you realized there was no school and the entire day was a free space on your bingo card.

Saturday Mornings

Before the sun even rose, my four siblings and I would jump from our beds and race to the television to watch our favorite cartoons. We’d prop up on our pillows and watch Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, The Smurfs, and Garfield and Friends until mom called us in for breakfast.

Cartoons weren’t our only Saturday morning tradition—we also got my mom’s famous waffles. While we relaxed, mom bustled around the kitchen and pretty soon, the sweet aroma of homemade waffles filled the house. She’d call us into the kitchen where a delicious spread of still steaming waffles and toppings awaited. Mom was the real hero, making sure this special family time happened every week.

Even as teenagers when early morning cartoon watching became snoozing in, we still awoke to the smell of mom’s Saturday morning waffles. We’d take turns at the bar, spreading a little Nutella hazelnut spread onto our waffle and decorate it with fresh fruit toppings and nuts. It made every  Saturday something special to look forward to.

Now as a mom myself, we continue the waffle bar tradition. Mom passed down her famous waffle recipe to me and it’s just as good today as it was when I was a kid. The recipe is simple— you always have the ingredients on hand—and the waffles are light and delicious. In fact, my dad refuses to eat waffles from a diner because they never measure up to my mom’s.

Nutella Creates Happy Memories

Nutella helps create happy memories. Whether it’s at a special family brunch, like the ones I remember growing up, or breakfast with your friends. Just a little bit of Nutella is all you need and makes a good memory even better.

Now our Saturday morning waffle bar consists of the same delicious waffles, a little spread of Nutella, a lot of fresh toppings, and a fun game of Scrabble.

I hope you enjoy mom’s famous recipe!

I’m going to assume you take your job as a mother pretty seriously. The fact that you clicked on this post leads me to believe you strive to do your parenting best. And because you are spending your free time reading parenting articles I’m willing to wager you are doing a mighty fine job at this whole mothering-thing. But have you ever considered the other parenting role you will one day take on (or possibly already have taken on)-the role of mother-in-law?

I’ll never forget the first time I heard the phrase, “A daughter is a daughter for life. A son is a son until he takes a wife.” As a mother of three boys, this is something I have contemplated & agonized over more than I care to admit. The thought of losing my boys to their future families is both reassuring and devastating. Of course, I want them to be devoted husbands & fathers. In fact, there’s nothing I want more for them. But the thought of not spending every single Christmas, Easter, 4th of July, & birthday surrounded by my men breaks my mommy heart a little bit .

My solution? I’ve resolved to be the very best mother-in-law I can possibly be.

Yes, I understand that my oldest is still over a decade from matrimony but it’s never too early to start planning these things. It’s my hope that by building good relationships not only with my sons but also with the women that they (will one day) love I will be a little more present in their future. I have spent so many hours considering this – obsessed much? Yes, yes I am. Mothers-in-law consistently get a bum rap. You just mention the word mother-in-law & it is almost always followed by grunts & echoes of disgruntled pasts. I do not want to be one of “those” stereotypical mothers-in-law. You know, the control-obsessed, overbearing, demanding women that everyone avoids.

In my attempt to master mother-in-lawing I  have spoken to just about every mother-in-law & daughter/son-in-law I know learning the do’s & don’ts behind in-lawing. I’ve read everything I can get my hands on regarding the subject, & I’ve even chatted with multiple family therapists. And I’ve got good news folks, it can be done! You can have a healthy, happy, positive relationship with your child-in-law. I’ve compiled the best tips I’ve come across to help you be the world’s greatest mother-in-law so you can excel at a mother’s other great role.

How To Be The World’s Greatest Mother-In-Law

1. Let go

Once those commitments are made & your child has devoted herself to another person your role as mother shifts. She is an adult, & you must allow her to make adult decisions. Of course, your job as a mother is not over. You will still have opportunities to teach, & guide, & help your child along life’s course. But for the most part, you have to trust that you did a pretty decent job raising her & she is now capable of making responsible & wise choices. Sometimes her path won’t be the same you would take but that doesn’t mean it’s wrong or it needs correcting.

2. Don’t judge

Your child may bring home the picture perfect person, or not. Either way, your response should be the same. Acceptance, acceptance, acceptance. You don’t get to pick who he loves but you do get to pick how you react to his love. And if you respond poorly, with judgment or criticism, then you will only drive a wedge between your child & yourself. There will be times when you disapprove of this new family member. That’s ok. But voicing your opinion will almost always cause more harm than good. Sometimes it may be necessary to speak up but most of the time you’ll be better off keeping your thoughts to yourself.

3. Welcome

Do you remember how scary it was when you first met your in-laws? It isn’t easy jumping into a new family. Do your best to ease the transition by welcoming this new family member with love.

4. Communicate

Let her know what your expectations & hopes are for this new relationship. Ask her what she expects from you, & what she doesn’t want from you. When you are both open & honest it will make the years so much easier for everyone.

5. Support

Marriages are extremely fragile these days. More than 40% of all marriages end in divorce. Chances are you don’t want that fate for your child. Do what you can to support her marriage. Show respect & honor for their bond by maintaining appropriate boundaries. Whatever you do, do not get involved in their arguments. No matter which side you choose you will always lose. Rather, offer support & comfort, & allow the couple to figure things out on their own.

6. Be a friend

Everyone wants another friend-especially when you are the new person in a family. Be that friend. Get to know your new in-law’s beliefs, traditions, hobbies, opinions, feelings, dreams, fears, & interests. Treat her like you would your oldest friend and if you are lucky she just may become an old friend.

7. Incorporate

Get to know your child-in-law’s traditions & interests & incorporate them in your family life when possible. Try out her favorite recipes, play that game he loves, or take a look at that book she highly recommended. Your in-law will feel more at home, & who knows, you may actually discover something you love.

8. Bite your tongue

Under no circumstances should you ever, I mean ever, make rude, snide, or cutting remarks about your new child-in-law. Harsh words are not easily forgotten. If you don’t have anything nice to say, well you know…

9. Don’t compete

I know you want to spend every holiday with your child & his young family. But remember, he now has in-law’s, too. You may not see them as much as you would like but by offering a loving environment for them to return to I guarantee you will get to see them plenty.

10. Don’t gossip

Nothing good comes from gossiping. Especially, within families. Most likely, anything you say will cross your new child-in-law’s ears eventually; so unless you would feel comfortable saying it to his face don’t say it at all.

11. Serve

For the most part, you want to let the newlyweds manage their lives on their own-they are adults after all. But you should be there to lend a helping hand whenever acceptable & possible. That is a mom’s job after all. And who doesn’t love someone that always has his back?

10. Have a Good Time

Be sure to enjoy your time with your family. That’s the best part of being together, right? Make memories doing things that you all enjoy. When you enjoy your time together you will all make being together more of a priority. Yes!!!

11. Move on

You are going to mess up, he is going to mess up. For a healthy, happy, lasting relationship it is best to just forgive & forget.

12. Love

Now let’s be clear, you don’t have to be a total pushover as a mother-in-law. But you do have to walk a fine line. Be mindful of what you say & do, but in the end, let your love for your child & his family guide you. As long as you have their best interest in mind you will rock this whole in-law-thing!

Do you have any other mother-in-law tips I should add to my list? If so, put them in the comments! I’m always looking for new ways to improve. I wish you the best of luck in your endeavor to be the best mother-in-law ever!
